Dogs and cats have higher senses of perception. A theory is that you give off pheromones during different emotional states such as anger, sadness, or happiness. Cats are able to pick up your emotional state because of these signals.

Contrary to some peoples posts, cats are more perceptive then dogs. When we are happy, sad, angry or depressed we put out pheromones. Cats are very sensitive to these pheromones and will come to you to comfort you. This is why experts suggest the elderly have a cat. They are lower maintenance and can essentially cure a broken heart. When your cat comes to comfort you, pet him. Love him, hold him, do whatever he likes best. It will make you and your cat both feel better.

The limbic part of the cat and human brain (one notch evolutionarily from the reptilian brain) is the seat of emotion. Cats are more open to responding from this level of their being - humans tend to ignore or be otherwise unresponsive to emotions as we get ourselves kinda out of touch or screwed up by intellectualizing. Cats can just respond clearly to the messages from that part of their brain which enables them to connect with us freely at that level. So your cat is definitely responsive to your feelings and that's something that makes them (and dogs) such wonderful companions.

Yes, they can tell. But a better question is do they really care....lol... He wants his needs met. To be pet and brushed when it suits him, food is the same way. My pain in the butte will snatch food from any of us when he is hungry. He will stand in your way until you give him an egg. He is ready for his daily treat the SECOND I get in the door at night. Good luck. I hope this helps.

Animals are sensitive critters and can sense that something is wrong, so they go to you to provide you comfort in their way.

I think smart cats know. I had one that knew when I had eye surgery (sniffed my eye socket) and when I had dental work (sniff my mouth). The dummy cat I have now wouldn't have a clue.
