Percogesic and slow flexing and arching of the back. Try sleeping flat on your back with a towel under your neck instead of a pillow, or sleep on your side with the knees drawn up. (A firm but not hard mattress is best.)
A back massage up, down, and to the sides (not just in the pain area) is good, as is application of mild heat or a hot shower combined with a little stretching/bending. Heat ointments like Ben-Gay or Tiger Balm can give some relief too.
Sometimes a little rocking on your back on the floor (carpeted), with knees drawn up to your chest is good too. Just don't overdo it - be gentle.
Longer term, try to exercise your back more.

rest as well as gentle walking ,always use your legs when bending and sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees as this takes the strain off your spin ,,,hot water bottle on the back when sitting in a firm chair,,,dont twist from th waist, turn the whole body ,dont lean over anything like you do when you wash up ,,keep your back tall and sttraight when going up stairs let the legs take the work ,,this will all help ,i damaged mine in 1995 and have had trouble since ,,,but i got a nerve trapped and couldnt walk for a whiloe and had to learn all over again ,but i have done it and it feels great but ,i have to be very carefull so never take this sort of thing as ,,,oh ill be ok ,,,,,cos if you are not carefull you might not be ,,,all the best ,,kat

yoga....try stretching your back out..
Some of my favorites are cobra, cat, downward dog, and child's pose.
Cobra is simply laying on your stomach and bring your hands up by your chest and push your chest off the floor while leaving your hips down.
Cat is a fun pose. You get on hands and knees and flex your tailbone up and as you do look up, then flex tailbone down and look down.
Downward dog is my favorite pose. Start from hands and knees and then lift your bottom in the air straightening your legs and arms. Don't have to lock knees or straighten leg all the way. Will feel a little shaky first time, but is so empowering.
Child's pose is a very relaxing pose, start by sitting on your feet and lean your chest forward over your knees and bring your head close to the floor and straighten your arms along the floor in front of you or to your side, just relaxing.

I had a very bad lower back problem for a # of years. I exercised a lot -excessively.
Now it's fixed. A new very firm mattress w/ pillow top did it. Also, sleeping with a pillow between my legs helped too.
