Usually the flags are left at half mast for one day. However, in honor of the former President Gerald Ford, President Bush has ordered that they remain at half mast for the entire month of January.

Depends on why. Right now we are going for 30 days in respect for our former President Ford's death.
Note: if the US flag is lowered all other flags should also be lowered--none should fly higher than our country's flag.

The death of a SITTING president is 45 days of mourning, and a FORMER president is 30 days.

If it is the former President you are refering to, it is thirty days. Other than that one day.
