bedlingtons and whippets, have been cross bred for donkeys years mate, this lot havnt got a clue because there two busy being dictated to by the ruddy kennel club thats ruined many a breed by there pathetic standards of what is supposed to be a PEDIGREE,before the wonderfull days of lets all eat well from the supermarket came some people relied on eating what they could catch,my own ancesters for starters.the good old bedlington x whippet was the best ferriting companion you could have,it didnt shiver or whine about it being cold it could scale a 5ft wall ,run all day,and catch you your next meal-the lovely tasty bunny rabbit.i work dogs and am a long time member of the fell and moorland terrier club, take it from me these dogs are regularly bred and usually are sold before they are born. UNLIKE staffies and the likes that fill the free add pages every week. go ahead mate if thats what you want and no they dont shed there coat allover the place.

Well there Del Boy, I think you might be in for a whole lot of responses telling you not to cross breed these dogs and I would agree. What I do know about the Bedlington is that they are very susceptible to copper toxicity. That means that if the dog gets a hold of a penny, it could seriously harm the dog. Both Whippets and Bedlingtons have their share of ills. As for shedding, I can't see the whippet losing too much but the Bedlington has a much hardier coat. They are cool dogs. They look like a lamb because they are put in with sheep herds to keep predators away!

A tried and tested combination it may be, but as you know so little about breeding that you felt a need to ask this question, I'd suggest it's a bad idea.
Hybrid dogs DO NOT BREED TRUE. Pure bred dogs do. That's not to say that they can't make good pets. BREEDING TRUE means is that with a pure breed, there are certain characteristics you can predict will be present in the puppies. With mixed dogs you can't predict this. You don't know which characteristics will be from the whippet and which from the bedlington. One whippet/bedlington cross is not guaranteed to look anything like another. eg. they may shed as much as the whippet or as much as the bedlington.
If you really must breed dogs, read up as much as you can about the subject. Find out about pregnancy and whelp, potential complications etc. Speak to experienced breeders.
Why do you want to breed them anyway?

Presumably, your reason for this mating is to have a good working dog & not just a pet? Have you got good potential homes for the rest of the litter? Anyway, it will depend if the puppies take after the Bedlington or the whippet in coat. The Whippet will moult, the Bedlington won't.

As usual, this section attracts numerous ignorant comments from armchair-bound do-gooders who have not got the remotest clue about working dogs. The whippet / bedlington is a tried and tested cross which can produce first class hunting dogs. Go ahead with this mating and enjoy your mini-lurcher to the full by allowing him to hunt through hedgerows etc for rabbits or rats (providing the government haven't outlawed that too).
As to their coats, any Bedlington crosses which I have seen did not cast excessively.

I would say that crossing, would mean that the y. Would shed. I have a Bedlington cross and he sheds. Good dogs though, bedlingtons are fab and crossed with a whippet, they would be more relaxed than bob marley lol ignore all those saying get a rescue etc, your dog's, do.what you want x

Hi,
To be honest why on earth to you feel the need to cross breed two completely different breeds?
You have not thought this through at all otherwise you would not even consider doing this. There are cross bred dogs dying every day as there are not enough homes for them and you will be adding to the problem. Are you prepared for how expensive a litter can be to rear, what if your dog needs emergency vet intervention, can you hand rear a litter,do you have at least £2000 put aside,do you have the space and time, would you be able to take back any pup you bred at any stage during it's lifetime.
I suggest you think long and hard about your reasons for wanting to breed such a litter.

What on earth for?????
How much they shed will depend on whether they get more bedlington genes or more whippet genes. No way to know for sure because it's a MUTT.
