i have a panasonic wide-screen telly, a dvd/vcr combi unit (samsung) and a humax pvr9200. Currently there are two scartleads connected to each. I am looking at getting some surround sound speakers for my system (dolby 5.1 maybe), but which is the best way to connect them to all of this?

Obviously i want to be able to watch a dvd with surround sound as well as freeview on the hummy, but without changing around the leads!

I am afraid the simple answer is the expensive one, get yourself a surround sound amp (AV). On the up side you can also connect Hi-Fi components CD Tuner etc and real speakers. My AV is programmable so the CD etc is set to stereo and the Video, DVD and T.V. are set to pro logic 5.1. Have a look at the Richer Sound Web page to get an idea of prices.

Easy, don't buy a "Home theatre Kit" what you're looking at is either a seperate amp and speakers (the expensive option) or what is somethimes called a "Surround sound upgrade kit" (from Sony at least, other brands may have different names for this type of kit.

The upgrade kit is basically an av reciever (the amplifier part) and a 5.1 speaker set. The av reciever is connected to the TV, whichever way is most appropriate, and the other devices all plug into the av reciever. You'll probably only have 1 lead going into the tv then, all the other products plugged into the av reciever.

This option makes it a lot easier as you won't have to split the audio out with a seperate set of leads and then set both to the same channel etc... Just put the TV on the av reciever's channel and then do all your changing on the av reciever.

Just make sure that you get a unit with as many connections that you need. You can get a package for as little as 250 EUR in the sales.

You need a surround decoder. Ones that input digital and line level analog audio aren't made anymore, and aren't entirely cheap to buy, if you find one. You cannot build one, because certain components require licensing from Dolby Labs and other parties, and as such aren't available as components that can be purchased by individuals with no developers or manufacturers license, and the license would not be easy or cheap to get. The cheapest thing you could do is get an surround package. It will come with speakers, probably a bit better than your computer speakers.

This will only help if all your components are HDMI Compatible. The easiest way to do it, is to buy a HDMI Switcher box . Its Around $200 for good One. (How it works) You run your HDMI cables from your components(OUT PUT) to the HDMI (IN PUT) on The Switcher Box. Run one Cable from Your (Out Put) on the Switcher Box to your TV and you are Set to Go. This will give you the Best Sound and picture there is. Here is the Web Site. It might Explain it better then I can. Good Luck....
