The key is to set them up for success. If you go hardcore, you can train them in about 2 weeks. Get a crate. The puppy should sleep in the crate at night. Start your morning first thing by carrying the pup (or putting them on a leash and walking very quickly to the door) outside to where you want them to potty. don't give any attention, don't talk to the pup, just let him do his thing. If he potties, then you can go inside and feed him, if he doesn't then back into the crate he goes and you can try again in about 15 minutes. Puppies are stimulated to pee after eating, drinking, or playing, so any time you see him doing any of these things, take him out 15 minutes later. Try to keep your pup on a leash in the house. They can sneak away so quickly! Put the leash around your ankle if you need your hands free. Remember, your puppy has no idea what's going on at first. Spanking and yelling at him will ruin your bond. If he potties in the house, it's your responsibility. Expect a few accidents and dont get frustrated when they happen. That crate is the best thing in the world while you train. If he doesn't potty when you take him out, put him in the crate until you take him out and he goes. JNo food or water after 8PM or 3 hours before the pup's bedtime. Good luck!!

Hitting, tapping the dog on the nose, sticking his face in the pee, is not the way to train any animal. It's considered animal cruelty! Puppies need to be taught , they don't just learn automatically. Crate training would probably be the best way to go. If you type "How to crate train a puppy" in your search bar, they have so much information that can help you train your puppy the proper way, and avoid future potty problems. It's going to take some time and patience, but in the long run it's worth it, and you'll have a dog, that won't be afraid of you, when he does do something wrong.

I'm training a puppy right now, too. What I find is really important to do is get the puppy on a outside schedule. For me it's right when I get out of bed, around lunchtime, after I feed him in the afternoon, about five, and then before I go to bed. I have two other dogs and they have never peed in the house again. He's a puppy, so of course you have to expect he's going to go in the house, and it might be at least once a day at first. If he goes in the house, try to catch him in the act, I fuss at him a bit, tell him he's bad put him on a puppy pad for second and if he doesn't go there take him outside. The thing with the puppy pads you could try to do, is if the puppy is going in around the same place every time in the house, put one there, put the puppy on it, and tell him he's good. I keep a pad at the back door, and he uses it. They have an attractant smell on them, that puppy will want to rather pee on, or pee right next too. I keep a little bell on his collar so I know where he is in the house. If the puppy starts walking around keeping his nose on the floor the whole time, smelling around, that's a clear sign for me that he's looking for a place to pee and take him outside. Be consistent and be patient, it's not going to happen overnight, but it's worked for all three of my dogs: jack russel terrier, chihuahua, and miniature pinscher.

Never hit a dog. It never helps and evokes fear in the poor puppy. Would you hit a baby if it pooped it's diaper? Puppies are babies and need training, not abuse.

I would suggest buying a crate. Keep the puppy in the crate at night. Leave just enough room for him or her to be comfortable, but not enough room to use the other side of the crate as a toilet. A dog will never mess where they sleep.

Place the puppy outside first thing when he wakes up. If the puppy eliminates, then praise the puppy, give him a treat and let him know he did a good thing. Bring him in to feed him. Wait 15 minutes, bring him out again. You really should be bringing the puppy outside every 2 hours.

If you can't supervise the puppy, place him in his crate.

I have successfully trained puppies by crate training them. It works but you must be diligent and determined to stick to a schedule.

Good luck.

i have a weimaraner she is know 1 almost 2 and i crate trained her. i had her house broke in 2 weeks. i would not rub its face in pee. with crate training it's really simple. if you are not with the dog (playing or watching it) but it in its crate. the crate should be just be enough for it to stand up turn around and lay down. take the puppy out when you wake up, after it eats, and after you play with it. if it does go in the house take the puppy out asap wait until it goes then bring it back in. i read somewhere i wish i knew where that when you clean it up in your house to make sure that the puppy is not watching you. i also did this when i took (Hope) my puppy out i waited until she started to go then told her to "Hurry" now when i take her out all i have to say is hurry and she will go. crate training was so easy for me i can not see house training a dog any other way. It takes time and of a night i would take her out right before i went to bed then i would get up a couple of times a night (started out 3 times) then as the days went by i took her out less and less. when i first got her house training was what i thought i would hate the most. but i cant say that i hated doing anything with her. She is a blast and i miss the days when she was a pup. now she is 64lbs.

NEVER hit a dog, or put his nose in his own urine, your best bet is to take him outside 15 minutes after he eats and as soon as he wakes from a nap. Hitting him and rubbing his nose in it will only make him do it more. Clean it up right away with a cleaner that has NO amonia in it. We used bleach cleaner when we were house breaking our now 3 year old dog. Just like human babies, puppies are going to have accidents. You wouldn't punish your child for having an accident, so please don't punish the puppy. Good luck house training.

NO..definatley do not hit the dog..it`s cruel..You will just have to take him outside as many times as possible and when he does his pee give him plenty of praise and a reward..Dogs are very intelligent and he will soon understand what you are asking of him..I guess it`s a little late but a few books on puppy care prior to purchasing your puppy would have helped..Have patience and follow all the good advice your fellow Yahooers will give you.

WOOOHO! hold back! dont beat your dog! thats old news!!! when a puppy pees inside its because you didnt take it outside!! pups are alot of work, they dont remember things and will forget where the door is sumtimes (depending on the breed),
you should take your pup outside every two hours!yes sir, they have tiny bladders and need to pee often. 2hrs before bed time pick up his/her water bowl till the next morning-this eradicates the peeing at night! but they still need to pee at night just not as much.

ok potty train, there are three methods 1 paper training and litter training 3 garden training

with garden training make your pup follow you outside (so she/he gets to know the route to get outside)
(i know this sounds lame but it works) when your dog pees or poops say "good boy/girl go potty" (it works) this helps coz when you are in a rush you take the pup outside and say "go potty"and your pup will imidiately go potty (it takes a few days/weeks to learn depending on the breed)

paper and litter training is much the same, just place the pup in the litter box and say go potty.

dont forget- puppies need to pee often-its your fault if he pees or poops inside. be consistant and responsible!!

good luck

sorry so long

No. that is against the law for animal crutly. If you have a cage when he pees put him it. No you cant it is a myth but they will never go on the potty. Also try pee pads for dogs. That works the best.

Well as my breeder says if they make an accident in your house its your fault and DONT yell at him for it. If you took the dog out more he wont have to do it in the house, A little rough i know. I have had my puppy for three days now and i learned that by saying a certain word to him while he is doing is business i use (tinkle time) so when i feed him, play with him and he drinks he goes outside and i say tinkle time he goes now that he hears that word. I know that sounds weird but when its pooring outside and he wont go its annoying. But take him out as much as possible and dont yell.
