I know she's probably still stressed out from the adoption. She hasn't been eating much either. So I'm sure this has a lot to do with it. But she hasn't pooped AT ALL, despite the small handfuls of food and some treats she's eaten. What do I do? And at what point do I start to get really worried?

Ok, first, unlike what some idiot above me said, kennels cough (aka bordetella) is NOT I repeat NO NOT NOT deadly! It is similar to the human cold. It may make them miserable for a few days, but thats about it. It is a highly contaigious airborne virurs that your vet offers a vacinne for. HAVING WORKED IN 2 BOARDING KENNELS, I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH THIS.

Second, I am sure that your dog hasn't eaten or had a bowel movement yet is because of stress. At the kennels where I worked, It was not uncommon for dogs to not eat or "go", because of the stress. I would give it a few more days and if nothing has happened by then, talk to your vet.

Also, one of the tricks I learned was that if you take him on a long walk and then stick a match (unlit, obviously) into the rectum, the sulfer on the tip will stimulate a bowel movement

GOODLUCK AND THANKS FOR ADOPTING

Lots of good answers here. . .
but just to recap,
Make sure she has plenty of ready access to water,
Yes, soak the dry food or give her some wet food and rice is an excellent way to get a dog back to regularity also a little corn,
Make sure the dry food you buy has over 20% protein in it (25+% is best),
Also very important is exercises and plenty of it.
Ever watch the Dog Whisperer? On Animal Planet.
That Cesar Milan fella is a genius.
Exercise, discipline, affection in that order is his recipe for success with dogs.
Walksand a bit of running 40-60 min twice per day is really important for a dog to get out all the energy and get the exterior stimulus they need to be happy.
Descipline and being the alpha dog (pack leader) for your dog lets her know you're the boss, you can take care of her and she can trust you.
Then affection come in.
Have fun. . .

Try feeding her some cooked rice with chopped up boiled chicken. Dogs LOVE it and it's good for them. I haven't met a dog yet that refuses to eat it.

Also, maybe the dog doesn't like the food you're offering. You might want to start mixing the dog food with some "dog friendly" human food. Just a few ideas - pumpkin (NOT pumpkin mix), cooked rice, boiled chicken or scrambled eggs (not spices added).

If none of these work then I would take her to the vet.

Good luck! I hope your dog is feeling at home soon. :)

does the dog have a backyard that it is let out into, or do you walk it? I ask you this because if you are walking it, and it isnt used to being on a leash, it might not want to go that way. my dog WILL NOT go number two if we are on a trip and he is on a leash. its weird but its possible. also like someone else said, you can check the dog for a blockage by some gentle pressure in the mid section to see if there is any discomfort. if it persists you should check with a vet, but if the dog is eating a normal amount of food, your probably okay, because believe it or not the dog knows if something is wrong, and normally wouldnt eat regularly if there was a serious problem.

If she's only eating small handfulls of food, it's very possible that (with the stress) her body is processing all of the food she's eaten and she doesn't need to go. However, I would still call the vets office to get their feedback. Try offering hard dogfood soaked in water. She might take to that a little better than regular dogfood.

She hasn't pooped because she hasn't eaten much.

Once she calms down and starts eating she'll be fine. Be aware that if it is a new food, she'll probably get diarrhea

I wouldn't worry unless it goes on for 2 or 3 more days. You can always call a vet to check, but I'd suspect it's not out of the ordinary that she isn't eating or pooping. Good luck!

I just wanted to let you know that she MAY be going under the bed, because my dog did that at first, we adopted her and she hid when she went potty, I can only assume from bad experiences in her past, so unless you are watching her 24/7, she may be hiding and going potty where you haven't looked! Just wanted to let you know my experience. I hope you enjoy your new dog!

Call a vet and ask them. Make sure your dog also has plenty of water, and very gently feel her tummy to see if it is full and rounded (a sign that she is constipated). Ask the people you adopted her from what her potty routine was; she might not know where she is supposed to go.
