A progressive neurological disease in which the upper motor nerve cells deteriorate. If the lower motor neurons are not affected within two years, the disease usually remains a purely upper motor disease.

PLS is a sporadic disease of unknown cause resulting in the degeneration of the nerves that control muscle contraction. There are rare, hereditary forms of the disease though most forms are not hereditary. If you are asking because you have the disease, your doctor would be able to tell you if you have one of the rare hereditary forms of it.
