You will pay a lot out of your pocket, regardless which car insurance you go. Anyway...this one you are describing is called FULL COVERAGE. if you don't want to pay a lot out of pocket if there's an accident, then you should ask for $250 deductible, but remember that this will make your insurance bill higher. The less deductible you pay, the more you will pay into your premium. Also, you will not always get money if you get hurt, sometimes....but not always! the insurance company will usually try to solve that for you, if not then they will let you know & you might have to get an accident lawyer to help you. Just don't worry about that right now, instead you should focusing on preventing accidents, because car accidents are headaches! especially if your a first timer. In answering your question: If it's your fault & you get sued, the insurance will pay it for you, you may just have to pay a portion (i don't know - it depends on your insurance) you can't just say, you don't want to pay a lot out of pocket. If you are still confused about it, then you should go to the insurance place in person. Also, don't forget to ask for these discounts, it will help bring your insurance bill a little bit lower: Multiple family discount, good driver discount, non-smoker discount, full time student discount, military discount. You may benefit more from going to your parents Auto Insurance. Here are some good insurance companies with my ratings:
AAA - good & worth it, lots of benefits but expensive!
State Farm - good for multiple family discounts
Farmers Insurance - expensive, don't go here!
Allstate - expensive! but good coverage!

You need an education. Find an insurance agent that handles several companies, not just one. Ask to come in, sit down, and talk about what you need and what you expect. This is what the agent is there for. The independent agent can also find the best company for your particular needs.
Sounds like you need comprehensive (covers theft, parking lot damage, etc.), collision (fixes it if you wreck it), and of course you will need liability. DO NOT SKIMP on liability. You can just do the state minimums, but if they are 10/20, like Oklahoma, this can leave you with a big lawsuit AFTER the insurance pays up. Many cars now cost over $50,000, and hospital bills for everyone involved can be HUGE. Cover your butt for a few extra bucks.
Good luck, and be careful out there. Give the other guy a break.

The best thing you can do is to go to an "independent agent" and let them shop around 'for you'.
