High maintainance people are those who make demands in a relationship that are significantly in excess of their partners.
It is hard work, no matter how much you love someone if the focus on a relationship is constantly on one partner and not the other. In its simple form...it is selfishness.

I had a high maintenance girlfriend once. At least once a week I had to get out the puncture repair kit. My fault really for trying to save money at the start. I upgraded to a tougher model and I've never looked back.

A HM b/f or g/f is someone who needs constant attention and always needs re-assurance that he/she looks the best.
They need to be centre of attention all the time, they thrive on it and if they dont get it then they can be grumpy as hell !
They need to feel that they are the only important thing in your life, they are very tactile people who need lots of loving, kisses, hugs and like to suprised with gifts and gestures all the time - it is hard work for the other person in the relationship and can be quite draining physically and emotionally !

Someone that only wears the best of the best designer labels and jewellery and changes their wardrobe and shoe collection with each season, someone who demands to have the latest and best of everything, food, drink, accessories, cars, houses (even living in the right area etc), clothes shoes. Someone who will only eat the best food and drink the trendiest drink, someone who will only go to certain shops and restaurants/clubs/bars etc. Someone who spends all their time and money on their appearance. Someone emotionally clingy and needy, and someone who critisises their partner's appearance because they may not be dressed in the "must have" label of the season.

For me its people who cant go with the flow. Always complaining about something. They dont like the radio station that was picked, they dont like the show we are watching on TV, they dont like the restaurant we went to.

It depends on which angle you are looking at it from, if it's financial or emotion, because the term refers to both.
