I find it interesting lay people describing people with BPD as sociopaths. No place in the DSM does it say anything of the sort. It is true that some BPD clients may also meet criteria for antisocial personality... which does have sociopathic traits.
Anyway, multiple personality disorder is what others have described here. A part of the person split off and formed an alter identity. Generally as a result of trauma. MPD is also known as dissociative identity disorder. It is a highly controversial diagnosis in the field.
Borderline personality disorder is also a trauma related disorder and dissasociation may be used as a coping mechanism. Generally people with borderline personality are people who suffered early trauma and are stuck in the toddler phase of development even though they may be adults. This is the reason for the push me/ pull me interpersonal interaction. A toddler learns from this push me/ pull me interactions how to develop a sense of self and a foundation for identity. A borderline, due to trauma during this stage does not grow past this dilemma developmentally.
Much like antisocial PD and borderline PD may coexist, some believe multiple personality and borderline PD may also coexist in some people.

Borderline personality disorder is a disorder in which the person is extremely self-involved and cares little about other people or their needs. A person with BPD cannot stay on track emotionally and alternately wants others to go away, but does not want to be abandoned. They either love you or they hate you. There's no in between with them. Basically, they are sociopaths.
Multiple personality disorder is when someone has experienced an extremely traumatic event in their life and the brain "splits" into other personalities to help cope with the trauma. This is a conversion behavior and the person is usually not at all aware of the different personalities - who often have names, ages and distinct feelings.

The difference between the two personality is that Borderline Personalty is a type of disorder where there is a prolonged disturbance in the function of his/her personality characterized by depth and different moods. There is instability in mood, inability to choose other options beyond two extreme answers for oneself (also known as splitting in psychology). At times, the personalty disorder can manifest itself in certain situations like unable to integrate difficult feelings from dilemmas encountered perceiving it as a unbearable situation (also known as idealization and evaluation in psychology), unstable and chaotic interpersonal relationships with other people through workplace and such and poor self image/identity/behavior/sense of self. In extreme cases, it can lead to disassociation of a person's psychological functioning. On the other hand, for Multiple Personality or Dissociative identity disorder it is known as a psychological diagnosis where it is describe as a condition where people suffering from it displays multiple distinct personalities known as alter egos with different patterns in dealing and participating with their present environment.

borderline personality disorder infers that the person is near to becoming a sociopath, one who feels that societal rules do not apply to them personally.
Multiple personalities are a trait of a conversion disorder, where trauma has induced the psyche to produce facets of the person's personalities as distinctive individuals to deal with issues the person cannot face.
