I recently went to the dentist because my filling came out of my upper wisdom tooth and started to rub on my cheek causing a painful blister in the back of my mouth. He said that this can cause mouth cancer if not treated. He suggested that I get my wisdow teeth pulled out but I dont feel any pain from them. Is he just trying to make money or being serious?

When I was young our dentist used to drill like he was looking for oil. Teeth always looked great brushed regularly etc. I remember the dentist showing the x-rays to me and my mother and I d be like I don t see anything... And I wasnt stupid. He d drill huge holes and fill away. When I was older at say 21 I had a different dentist tell me I had a small cavity that should be filled. I said can I see the x-ray and again it didn;t look like anything. I know I am not an expert. I say I d rather not fill it is there any other alternative. He says well we could try a flouride treatment and see if it remineralizes. Sure enough, it s been 26 years and no other dentist ever mentioned that tooth. Drill baby drill must be the solgan at the Dental Association meetings. I will never trust a dentist about my kids cavities. There is obviously an incentive to drill for dough. My son has been told he has one now. I will be going to see the x-ray myself on his filling appointment. Certainly not all but many a dentist are like used car salesman with a license to rip you and the insurance companies off. I wonder if my teeth would be white and not full of amalgam if not for the drill baby drill routine.

First he didn't lie. However, u don't have to let him/her pull them. Get another opinion. I actually went to maxillofacial surgeon to have mine removed. He was less expensive, let me go into twilight sleep, and pulled them. I woke up done. No pain and healed great. During the procedure hubby got the prescriptions filled and was back before I awoke.

They had written instructions, following ice packs or use of ice machine is so important, getting lots of rest, drink water, take the pain medicine as directed. Don't be a hero. Warnings about dry sockets, and what I should look out for. It's very important to follow directions, have someone with you to be proactive.

If a piece of bone should be left in... u will get sick, u won't feel right. It's a different kind of pain. Trust ur instints. So if u really feel bad, that other person needs to insist u get back to dentist to recheck. Dentist r human, they can miss something.

If u doubt your dentist advice, see a orthodontist who can take x-ray or bring yours and evaluate whether your wisdom teeth need to come out. Wisdom teeth tend to push teeth who look perfect now; later on shift the teeth and alter the smile. Good luck in your decision.

There is some truth in what he says, but then anything can be attributed to cause cancer!!. Also these days most dentists recommend pulling out wisdom teeth whether it causes pain or not., something which was unheard of earlier. It will definitely make a hole in your pocket but on the other hand will end your pain.

One is not related to the other. Granted, any time you have an open sore it can invite problems...I wouldn't think cancer would be at the top of the list though.

Wisdom teeth have nothing to do with fillings coming out but if he was doing x rays and happened to see them coming in wrong, it could be legitimate. Sounds like you need to ask some more questions.

Listen to Dr. Haya.

It is going to cost money to replace the filling in your wisdom tooth. It is going to cost you money to get the tooth pulled. Either way, the dentist makes money. It costs more money if an oral surgeon (specialist) extracts them. Less if your dentist does it.

If your dentist saw lots of plaque on your wisdom tooth, he/she will have the opinion that you are unable to keep your wisdom teeth clean and more cavities will appear eventually. Eventually there will be more filling than tooth. Teeth that are mostly filling are more susceptable to breaking. That's why dentists recommend crowns on teeth that are mostly filling. What about your diet? Do you drink lots of pop/juice and sugar? Acid in pop and juice is bad too. Sugar+bacteria; forms acid = cavity.

It will actually cost more in the long run to keep putting fillings in a single tooth that keeps getting cavities because you are unable to keep it clean or you drink/eat lots of sugar, than it would be if you just had it pulled in the first place.

So the question is.... do you keep your wisdom tooth clean and plaque free? Do you eat/drink alot of sugar or acidic drinks? If you don't take care of your teeth, or you are unable to reach the wisdom tooth with a toothbrush properly, you should just get it pulled out.

If the cavity on your wisdom tooth is on the surface (mesial surface) that is touching the tooth in front of it, the cavity causing bacteria will get to work on your tooth in front of your wisdom tooth and cause a new cavity there. Then you will have 2 teeth with cavities instead of just one. I have seen this COUNTLESS times on x-rays. The second most common place to get cavities is in between the teeth.

I have never heard that not pulling wisdom teeth increases risks for cancer. I do know they can cause various levels of discomfort for some people, but not for all. Some don't ever get them pulled. I did a long time ago and they were bothering me.

Sounds like he's trying to scam you with the cancer story. I'd go somewhere else. There are bad densists out there.

Usually oral cancer comes via smoking and chewing tabacco.

I have never heard of a tooth rubbing on your cheek causing cancer. Are you sure there were not other factors or maybe you misunderstood. Wisdom teeth are typically taken out because many people do not have room for them and they are hard to keep clean.

Sorry I'm not much help.

He is telling the truth,

What happens is that constant irritation to your cheeks --> reaction to that irritation --> episodes of healing and injury and healing again --> soft tissue is more fibrotic and less elastic --> modification of cells, tissue components --> after complicated processes and as a result to that modification, cancer cells may appear

Cancer could occur as a reaction to many things that a person would never think of (cheek biting, eating too much spices with food)

My opinion is, go get a second opinion and these are alternative options:

1- restore the tooth with a new filling
2- round sharp edges

If the tooth cannot be restored or sharp edges cannot be rounded, pull it out.

huh? Well he'll definantly make more money off of you if you let him pull out your wisdom teeth. Gurgle some warm salt water a couple of times a day. That should help with the blister.

Although not likely, anything which causes constant abrasion in the body has the chance of causing cancer. This is how asbestos workers can get lung cancer from asbestos particles irritating lung tissue.
