Between June and September are the best times of year for better weather (there is no guarantees though since this is Scotland!). If you don't like the areas you intend to visit to be too busy, try to avoid the last week of July and the first week of August as this tends to be the fortnight office workers and the like get off. However, this is also the time that carnivals are in towns and Edinburgh hosts a number of events.

Midges are more of a pesky problem if you're going into the bushes or for walks in the evening but a spray down with the green Avon Skin So Soft oil keeps them away.

Summer time isn't bad honestly. Try that remember there might be lots of rain and humity but the most beautiful time.
