A 10 yr old cat is not that old and it is not "senility" that is causing him to do this. Even if cats use the outside for much of their toileting they still need a litterbox inside if they spend the night there (and all cats should be in after dark IMO). With two cats you might even need to have THREE litterboxes to meet their needs and at least go for one other.

The most common cause of inappropriate urination (especially with male cats) is some sort of urinary problem and that should be checked right away by a vet to see if this is going on. Do not neglect to do this as soon as possible and you do not want bad "habits" to continue in the house.

He needs to be checked for a urinary tract infection.

Older cats and cats who are neutered are often victims of urinary tract infections.

If he is eating regular cat food you buy in stores, and is neutered, this could be the cause.

It would be beneficial to you both to seek the advice of a veterinarian at this point. There is usually a medical reason for urination in the home after that long.

Good luck.

It might be worth getting him checked over by the vet. Cat's are very prone to urine problems especially as they get older. Perhaps he is having trouble getting to the tray sometimes.

It might be worth getting him checked over by a vet. Several health problems including Urinary Tract Disease (crystals in the urine), kidney failure, and cancer (amongst others) can manifest in this way.

If the vet gives him the all-clear, it may be early-onset of senility ...

he probably can smell where he has been before so goes back there, try and section off the places he normally goes and trap him in a small room with the tray
