Well it my help to talk to some of your co-workers who may be into Deer hunting, buy some books and or VHS/DVDs on the subject. If you have sattlelight tv or cable check out the Outdoor ch., etc.
Once you have gone through the steps I have first suggested then, pick out your weapon of choice. Check with DNR because some states have restricted areas to what type of firearm may be used, rifle, shotgun or even a handgun. If your choice is a bow thats a hole different ball game so once again please check with your DNR office and ask questions because, you dont want to break any laws in the field and end up in jail.
Depending on your hight & weight depends upon rifle choice and the woods you may encounter like heavy/thick brush, some open country, etc.
Rifle actions: My personal choice is the bolt-action, lever action, pump action, semi auto and single shot. A good choice of a Deer round/caliber is a, 308 Winchester, 270 Winchester. Here are some of the others though I'm not a big fan on 243 Win. (a little on the small/light side) 30-30 Win. one of the most popular Deer hunting rounds...a true classic, the 30-06 is also a classic round. The weapon of my chooice is a Browning A-Bolt Medallion chambered in a 7mm Reminton Magnum with a Leupold 4.5X14 50mm Vari-X III
Handguns: nothing smaller in caliber than a 41 Rem Mag in a revolver, I use a Dan Wesson 44 Mag. I also have used a Thompson Center Contender super 14 chambered in a 35 Rem. The T/Cs are a single shot pistol, you change the barrel and you change the caliber...my other barrel is chambered in the popular 223 (5.56 Nato) Rem.
Bows: check out BowTech.
Sorry I can go on and on here on this subject.
Any way good luck and be safe, don't be afrad to ask questions, even go to a few of your local sporting shops and compare Q&As.
Hope this helps...

First get good enough with your rifle to hit a Coke can at 100 yards. The biggest mistake new hunters make is they don't spend the time they should at the target range, and they end up wounding deer as a result. This is cruel to the deer, and provides anti hunting groups with something to use against us.
After you are good enough with your rifle, go to the place you will be hunting and look around before hunting season. Look for trails and things the deer can eat, and remember where the trails are that lead to feeding areas.
When it is time to hunt, go sit about 20 yards off a good trail in a place where you can see the trail but a deer on it will have a hard time seeing you.
Try to stay perfectly still, except for slowly looking around occassionally. If you hear something coming, don't move until you see it, and then if it is a deer you want to shoot, look for other deer with it, and only when you think no deer are looking in your direction and the deer you want to shoot is standing broadside to you, carefully aim at the back edge of the deer's front leg aboout 2/3 of the way down from the top of the back and shoot, being caraful to remember not to jerk the trigger. Be smooth. Make no fast of jerky motions, and don't shoot at a running deer.
Always to remember to have respect for the animals that provide us with food...
And thank God for it when you get a deer...

The answer depends on your equipment, your terrain and your local laws. If you have a centerfire rifle or a shotgun that will shoot slugs, you probably have a gun that will work. One reply mentioned an SKS, which is a very good choice for shots 150 yards or less (wooded terrain). If you are in the mountains and see one on the next peak you should have a bolt action, high powered rifle. Check your states conservation department web site for laws. Go to www.gutpilestyle.com for more help. I am a soldier, outdoorsman and hunter. email me if you like.
