Ignore the first post feel that is a pathetic answer, unhelpful and pointless.
Ecstasy impairs the function and long term production of serotonin, a brain chemical playing a role in regulating mood memory, sleep, and appetite in the long term according to studies. I myself used to regularly take ecstasy at weekends and dance the night away... I have since slowed down with this now as I noticed quite bad feelings of despair for silly reasons like if it was raining, a monday, i didnt go out. I decided that it was due to the over use of this drug. Speed on the other hand I am not so into, it is said that you can become dependant on this drug but if you quit so long ago then that is not a problem. I understand that the side effects are loss of weight and insomnia but that is during usage.
To be honest I wouldnt worry too much about your memory loss as it is normal to forget things occasionally! If you are really worried a doctor is always a friendly confidential ear. I still think you are ok though if it has been so long since you were hammering it, then I am sure your body has repaired itself somewhat, the human body is a magical complex thing! :)

There are some really weird and screwed up answers here..! hey, anyone who has done a few.... and knows what they're talkin about will probably agree that, long term, there aren't many noticeable side effects that would change your life/lifestyle apart from damage to short term memory cells.
Try searching for different side effects online, however from personal experience I can say that apart from abit of anxiety soon after stopping, nothing much else seemed to change, (ok, i can't remember alot of silly things - names, where i left the keys, ect..).
U might occassionally be out with some mates and after a few drinks.. with the right vibe around you.. or maybe a familiar tune.. would bring a "craving".
To try regain some of the lost short term memory cells.. I found Ginseng and word games seem to help, although you would find various articles claiming that once the cells are gone.. they're gone.. however.. no harm in trying! after all.. you can only improve.

I wouldn't worry too much about long term the effects, especially as you don't use them now and haven't for 4 years.
I took pills most weekends for about 3 yrs and haven't really noticed any long term effects, and I read that organs like the liver will repair themselves after time, and I would guess that if you feel your memory is not too good, there are books you can buy to improve it with exercises and stuff (my memory has always been rubbish!)
although I did crunch one of my double teeth in half when i was on E once!!

It causes injury to the brain; especially the chemical called serotonin which affects mood (becoming depressed), sexual desire, aggression & sensitivity to pain. It also affects the memory & thought process. It can also cause liver damage. Studies have shown that the symptoms become evident 6 to 7 yrs later.

According to Erowid, long term MDMA (ecstacy) may cause depression, because it alters the serotonin chemistry in your brain.
Depending on the quality of the tablets you take, you may experience other symptoms as well.

I used ecstasy, speed and LSD from my early teens along with several prescription drugs like valium. My memory is shot to hell and I wish I could remember what I got up to.
It can also lead to baldness (got it), and sterility (not got it) but I can't remember any of the other things ...

long term kidney and liver damage which progress and get worse over time. Early onset senility. suggest you see a doctor, probably an internist, be honest with him and see if there is any sort of therapy that might help you.
