She had a litter of kittens about 5 weeks ago and now she spends ages scratching away at the mat under her food bowl. She is normally an outside cat but has been indoors since giving birth. She uses her litter tray and does everything she normally does but the scratching is really starting to drive me mad. Please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This goes back to her elemental nature- she is trying to hide her food from other prey- ensuring that she has enough food for her new babies. I know it must be annoying but it will only last a short while until the babies are older and she is just trying to be the best mother she can be! Maybe try moving the food bowl to a location closer to her and the kittens so she doesn't feel as if there is a chance of the food being taken whilst she isn't there? Good luck! Enjoy the kittens!

I don't know why she does it, but my cat does too. I adopted a 5 year old spayed female from an animal shelter and she scratches around her bowl as if she's trying to cover it. I did have another cat when I adopted her, but my 19 year old cat was confined to my bedroom and the two never met face to face. None of my other cats have ever done this, but this cat was called "Mama" when I adopted her so I suppose she had kittens in the past. I guess the old behavior lingers even though the kittens are long gone.

My 14 year old cat scratches the floor around his litter tray, it is all to do with burying either food or their poo! Mine also very occasionally scratches the wall - I never had a cat do this before - it's all in the genes and there's a reason why they do it but its beyond us mere human mortals we are no match for a cat!!

She might be tring to get some of the food to her kittens but the mat makes the food stop moving so she is still tring and never giving up. She might think her kittens are not getting enough food so she is trying to get them more. She will stop once the kittens are off on there own. Oh and you might want to think about getting your cat spayed!

My cat scratches the mat all the time and is something she has always done she does it for ages before she drinks her water. I really don't know what it is about but it can be annoying. You just get used to it.

She's covering her food as outdoor cats do so they can return to it later. She's a little frustrated that her scratching on the floor isnt giving her the same results as dirt. Be patient.

My cat does the same thing, sometimes waving his paw about in the air trying to scratch invisible stuff over his dinner, but if he manages to get a bit of paper or something over the dish, he stops.

maybe she will stop when the babies are gone.
