She had her puppies with no complications and everybody is doing great. Theres only one problem. My friends left 2 pints of ice cream out and since she devoured that ice cream she has had diareah. Its been about two and a half weeks and her diareah has not gone away. Could this be because she is nursing? Do i need to give her any suppliments while she is nursing? Should i give her fiber to harden her stool?...i need some answers so i can help take car of this once homeless mother...Thanks

Sounds like she needs vet care. Her problem may be from intestinal parasites if she lived on the street for any time. If not treated she may pass parasites (or disease) on to her pups. Many vet's will give discounts for rescued animal treatment and even help you find good homes for the pups. They also have reduced fee spay programs. Your local humane association can help with vet bills and placement, also. Good luck

God Bless You for rescuing the poor baby. I wish more people would do that. The fact that she just had puppies, you found her in the streets, and she has had diarhea for that long, she and the puppies should be taken to the vet and examined ASAP, because finding her on the street, it may or may not be the ice cream. The problem is, you don't know what she may have gotten, if anything, by being on the streets, and it could be something that could be causing this problem, that could be affecting her and her puppies. She and the puppies are probably really dehydrated. I think a vet would be the best bet, just to make sure her or the puppies don't have something more serious going on.That way the vet can diagnose and treat both mom and puppies, if there is an underlying problem. Thanks for having such a good heart, and helping this poor little girl and her babies. Hope all turns out ok, and both mom and puppies are healthy. Good Luck! Hope this helps! Please let us know how everything goes!

Some diarrhea is not that uncommon in dogs after giving birth, but since the diarrhea has persisted for more than 48 hours it is time to contact/see a vet. Make sure the dog has plenty of water until then. Also, a change in food and even water source can cause diarrhea in a healthy dog. As far as supplements, I feed my post-birth females a good quality puppy food. It has the extra nutrients that she'll need. Also, if the ice cream was chocolate or had chocolate in it be aware that chocolate can be toxic to dogs.

Right now I have a dog nursing and I have noticed diareah and I think it is normal. However if it never stops then you should take her to a vet.
