Romano isn't just an Italian name. It's of ancient Latin origin, so yours is probably from Spain, that's all.

As in Ray Romano? Since Romano has to do with Rome and Romans you're on the right track. You're correct in thinking your last name came from Italy. I would ask my parents, or, if they are alive, your grandparents, if they know. Check with a web search, or with census/immigration records. If your family has been in the Dominican Republic a long time maybe there are records of crew members who were with Italian explorers, like Columbus(who I believe visited there on one of his voyages). There will also be, I'm sure, land records of people who lived in the country.

Go to an ancestory website like Ancestory.Com and do a "name search".

Also, asking family members how far back the name goes will help a great deal as well.
