It is usually 20% of the price of the service, but not everyone can pay that, especially if they get a perm or color service and we hair dressers understand that. I appreciate whatever my clients give me.

it depends what you get done. i worked in a salon where the hair cuts started at $25, so the average tip was $5. When someone got color or highlights, the tip would range from $10-$20. don't forget to tip the shampoo person if it wasnt your stylist who washed your hair. hair stylists usually depend on tips just as waiters do... they either work on commission or rent a booth.. and rarely get paid hourly. and most stylists understand if you're on a tight budget (you dont have to come out and say you dont have much to spend, but you can hint that you have a lot of bills or whatever while you are getting your hair done :)

It depends on the setting, service and how much you like the haircut.
For instance if you go to a really good salon and pay $50 for your haircut, you can't just leave them 5 dollars.
Also it'd be a little cheesy to leave a few dollars if they shampoo and style it.
I say give more to your hairstylist than you would say, a waiter. They hold your hair and image in their hands and try their best to make you look awesome when you leave their chair.
Also, if I'm in love with what they do, I leave 5 dollars more.

Depends on how good of a job she/he does. If you are satisfied with the way they did your hair then tip well. 20% is good.

If you do not like what they did, or they did not do what you asked for, then tell them...and dont tip. Why tip for a horrible job?

15%-20% is the norm, even for larger service dollar amounts. I consider it rude to leave anything less than 15%, especially if the stylist has spent a considerable amount of time on you. (Obviously I am referring to a service that was performed well - if the service was sub-par, it is ok to give a sub-par tip).
