I lost 80 pounds back in high school (I was 185, now I am 105) and have kept it off for 10 years.

I lost weight when I ditched the diets and made lifestyle changes instead. You have to learn to eat like a thin person, which means you can have a cookie or a small piece of cake, not 10 cookies or 3 pieces of cake. Also, I exercise every day except sunday for at least 45 minutes, and I eat 5 small meals a day of no more than 1500 calories (for maintenance... less when trying to lose.)

In the mid-1980s, I joined Overeaters Anonymous, a program modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous, and using the same 12-step program. I lost about 150 pounds, as I recall, in about two years, which should tell you how much I weighed to start!

As to keeping it off . . . I did all right even after I quit the program (long story why I quit), until I got hit by a car and my leg was broken in two places. I couldn't get any exercise to speak of, and once I started physical therapy, that was the ONLY exercise I got for a long time. In addition, I was sitting around, very bored, and you know how that is for munchies. When I walked, it was a few blocks, not a few miles. Gradually, the weight crept back on.

Over the next 18 years or so, it all came wandering back. You do need to stick with the program to make the weight stay off you.

A few years ago i went on a serious diet and lost 60 pounds. I was watching everything that I ate and exercising about an hour a day. It came off pretty quickly. But as soon as I got comfortable with my new weight, i got lazy again and gained 40 pounds back. Since then I havent gotten back into excercising again. You really need to make it a life long change to keep the weight off. There is no way around it, you have to exercise to keep it off.

OK Mary, how did you do that? This is January 15, 2007. You lost weight in the future? I've lost 65 lbs since 2003. I tried low carb (South beach) for six months and when that was about to kill me I opted for Curves, and have stayed with that for three years. Had I dropped out of that I would have packed the pounds on QUICK so bottom line~~~~~stick with the program! BTW I still do a modified low carb diet plan.

I've recently lost about 70 lbs - just the old fashioned way - eating good meals and moving more. I cut out all the junk food - no drive thru, no chips or chocolate, no french fries, no sodapop. I started slowly - I changed just my diet first - I started eating whole grains, more vegetables, more fruit, salads. After I got the eating under control I started to work out - only 15 mins walk a day whether I wanted to or not. I thought 15 mins isn't too much, and once I was out there I felt good and usually kept going! I tried to find different activites to do so I wouldn't get bored with workouts - aquafit, biking, hiking. I'm going to join a gym now and try some classes like Yoga. I limit my TV time and just try to find other things to do around the house. I allow myself to indulge in a treat now and then so I don't feel deprived. Its just common sense and alot of hardwork to get off the weight and keep it off. I'm at a plateau now so I have to add to my workout to lose the last 50 lbs. Stay motivated and get educated about nutrition. I find www.ediets.com is very helpful and full of information. They have message boards to talk to others too. Don't give up if you have a bad day - just get up, dust yourself off and get back on the horse.
Good luck with your weight loss!

I didn't lose 50-60lbs...but I lost 30lbs from starvation 2 years ago. I weigh myself every morning naked to make sure that I weigh the same. If I gain a pound or two, I can always adjust it in next few days. Also, if you weigh yourself every day, you will learn how much you can eat to keep your current weight.
