If you NEED it cut shorter because it's in bad condition, then go with it but you can't let them make decisions for you. The last time I had my hair cut she cut it how she wanted to and I had to tell her that I thought it looked horrible. Your own instinct is always better than a strangers.

Speaking from experience...absolutely not!!! If you've had long hair and it's something you don't mind, you've had it long for some time etc., and it's not damaged, then just trimming will be far easier to allow you to determine if you really do wish to have it cut shorter.
I had grown my hair out to just below my shoulders (I've had it as long as to my lower back at times). I went in just before the holidays for a hair cut, I have always cut my own hair but wanted a "treat" and when the cut I wanted went south on the hair dresser, she suggested I have it cut shorter...by the time she'd finished hacking it I had it up to my ears....she even had the friggin nerve to yell to all the other beauticians in the place..."Hey everyone, remember how long her hair was when she came in? Look at it now!"
Every day that I look in the mirror, wake up with bed head and can't do squat with it...I want to go back in time and make sure I never do something so stupid again! It will probably take me til mid summer to grow it out again and once that happens, a hairdresser will never get her scissors on it again.
You can always take more off....you can't put it back on once cut unless you go for the $1500 extensions...which I've been strongly considering ;)

While a hairdresser is a trained professional and he/she probably is telling you to cut your hair shorter because he/she believes it would suit you better, the hair is yours and you have the final say. The hairdresser may also be telling you to cut it shorter because it is damaged. In this case, it would be a good thing to cut your hair because healthy hair looks better than unhealthy hair. Just talk to your professional and figure out why he/she believes you should cut your hair. If it is because your hair is damaged, then cut it off and then grow it out again. If it is because he/she thinks it would look better, do what you think is best. It is your hair after all.

is this a trick question in that you cant cut it longer??
If not & you mean should you have a shorter style just cos the hairdresser says so - then, no...unless you agree with her that it would look better - have your hair the length you want it! (Course, if you had it shorter it would grow back so no real harm done.)

not just because the hairdresser says so no, my hairdresser once told me that as I was short I could not have long hair - what rubbish, didn't go back there again...
if however you have never had it cut or have coloured or permed it to death then the best thing for it could be a good cut.

It depends on why they're suggesting you should cut it. If you have damage and you're looking to grow it longer, usually the best thing is to cut off the dead ends and let the healthy hair grow. If you leave dead ends on the hair, it will break off and seem to never get any longer. If their suggestion is purely a preferance or suggestion as to a cute style for you, by all means, feel free to tell them no if that's what you choose. Keep in mind, it's a stylists job to offer suggestions and to help you come to conclusions, but don't feel like they'll be mad at you for not following them. (If they do get mad, it's time to shop for a new stylist. It's their job to give you what you want in the end).

No, not unless they did a great job of recommending something, and you completely agree.
A hairdresser may insist on a trim, but an actual haircut is all in your court on the decision of it.
If they're persistant and rude about you not feeling their idea, you need to get a new hairdresser.

no way! some hairdressers love the opportunity to work on longer hair, so they can try and do some grand, elaborate cut...but unless you're hair has a good few inches of split ends and damage, dont cut it off because they say so! xxx

You don't have to take the hairdressers advice but if you have very bad split ends it would be wise to have them cut off. I left my split ends for too lond and the ends of my hair broke off and made my hair look thin. - I was too busy to go to the hairdressers but have learned my lesson.
