I try to keep my two dogs (a black lab and a weimaraner) off the couch. But of course they hop up there every time I leave the room. Until I get them trained a little better, is there anything I can do to keep the couch from smelling like a dog? I vacuum it off every day and try to spray it with fabric freshener, so the smell isn't too bad. But I'm afraid over time, it will get worse. Any suggestions?

Go to Wal-mart, they sell OUT in the pet isle. You spray it on the couch and the smell goes away, works great on accident spots too.

The majority of the smell comes from secretions and dander from your dogs, which will penetrate into the cushions, and will only really be removed by deep cleaning. Several suggestions: You can get a slip cover for your couch, which is washable -- if you do this regularly, the majority of the smell will be removed with it. Febreeze is a decent product to at least temporarily neutralize the odor, but over time, it will probably come back. If it smells particularly funky, you can also get Nature's Miracle from the pet store or Petsmart, which seems to work pretty well on everything from general odors to urine (it's designed for urine stains).

What I would do (unless it REALLY stinks) is wait until you've trained the dogs to consistently stay off the couch, then arrange for a free in-home demonstration by a Kirby representative, and be sure to ask for a demo of their upholstery cleaning option (the thing works as a deep cleaner with a special soap). The thing works, but I wasn't convinced it was worth the $1200 price tag, so I just thanked the rep for the demo and said I'd stick with my crappy vacuum I picked up at a garage sale for $20. *snicker* That's just me, though -- I'm cheap.

Hi... I have that problem sometimes too. I remove the cushion covers and wash them with very little detergent in cold water, no fabric softener. I let them air dry before putting them back on. While they are washing, i very lightly spray the rest of the couch with Febreze and vacuum it very thoroughly. It seems to work, and l have to do it only about every 4 to six months. I have also started keeping a blanket on the cushions that I can remove and wash as needed. Keeping the windows open for about an hour or two seems to help keep the doggy smell down too.

I bought a sofa cover at Kmart, it has a rubber backing.

I actually like my dogs on the couch with me. But didn't want my good furniture to smell like them. This did it for me.

When company comes, off with the cover and out or confined with the dogs and Viola' all is well with man and beast.

It's easy to remove and toss into the washing machine.

put mouse traps under a blanket on the couch. When they jump up there, they will go off and startle the dogs. They won't hurt since they're under a blanket but it's enought to make em think twice about jumping up there.
