Very good question. He said he was leaving prior to his last season due to the 'big' changes that were happening. The £40m investment, or perhaps a loan is a better term, by Joe Lewis meant big changes and maybe it was thought Walter couldn't makes those kind of big decisions and therfor stepped aside. But I will tell you one thing, the amount of money spent on that team back then by Advocaat was astounding and we massively under achieved in europe having gone further before and after Dick's reign and I have always though had we kept Walter he could of brought the champions league to Ibrox with the resources he would have had. I'm not saying he would have but we had spending power back then when not many other big clubs did.

Could he not combine both roles after all and international manager doesnt work with his players everyday? Personally think Derby County's Billy Davies is the man for Ibrox-maybe George Burley-2 scots with excellent track records-Walter Smith is good but hes-the past-look forward!!

I think he should only be released after June 29 2008, when Scotland have won the Euro Champ in Austria (details of teams and scores to follow)

I think so, that is where his heart lies. I would imagine they will have to compensate the SFA. I have no idea who they will replace him with, he was doing a fine job.

He will go back to Ibrox.
Money talks...Scotland should have tied him up for longer.
