General staph infections can be treated with simple antibiotics. Specifically speaking, there are types of infections that are resistant to most treatments, namely MRSA (methlycillin resistant staph aureus) and VRE (vancomycin resistant enterococci). These are more difficult to treat, and once you're considered infected, hospitals will usually flag you as MRSA positive on all concurrent hospital stays to avoid any chances of you spreading this infection to others. In some people it is a potentially deadly infection. These infections are from people not finishing their antibiotics (among other things) and the strong bacteria that survive multiply and learn to mutate and become super bacteria like the above mentioned. Usual staph infections (like the kind you get when you get a papercut, etc) are not as worrisome, and can be treated easily with antibiotics.

yes, as with most infectious agents, once you have it, you have it forever.
the best you can do it maintain a healthy lifestyle.
eat lots of vegetables & fruits, exercise, and don't engage in immune system weakening activities (smoking, drinking, not sleeping enough, etc)
if you are given an antibiotic to combat the infection, take all of it, do NOT stop the treatment in the middle just because to seem to feel better. that will only end up strenghening the remaining bacteria, and may make them resistant to the antibiotics next time, which can threaten you life as well as anyone who you may happen to infect.
below are some links to more info about staph infections.

I don't think that's true. My baby got a minor staph infection when he was about 3 months old. Anti-biotics didn't clear it all up, so he needed surgery to clean out the infected area, but that was a year ago and he's fine now.
