Are there exceptions for students on the one year reentry limit for green card holders?

I want to study for an RN degree in my birth country, the UK.

Only if you get advance approval BEFORE you leave. In that case you can extend your stay to 2 years.

Yak Rider is confused. If you have a green card, you don't need advance parole. You can get a re-entry permit that will allow you to stay out of the US for up to two years, but not a day over.
