Unfortunately, everyone is right about not being able to get out of the airport and back in time to make your flight.
If you are in the International Flight section, I would hit the duty free shops, get some lunch and just walk through as many terminals as possible to stretch your legs. If you are in the domestic flight section, you could shop for a souvenir or two, and again walk and stretch your legs & get a bite to eat.
Come and visit us in L.A. when you have a day or so to spend, and have a safe trip!

Just getting in and out of the airport and to your destination will probably take at least an hour and a half. Airport traffic is terrible, and then to get anywhere that is worth seeing will take some time and will require a ride on the freeway. Try to find a restaurant or bar in the airport and make plans to come back at a later time when you can stay for at least a couple of days.

You'll need at least 1 day to do something in LA. You can get stuck in traffic for 3.5hrs.
From LAX, you can take a taxi to Manhattan Beach to eat. Depends on time of day... You're better off reading or shopping at LAX.

Everyone who has answered this has forgotten one very important thing about the LAX surrounding area. LIVE LIVE LIVE NUDE NUDE NUDE GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS. About half a mile from LAX is a strip club which has made many cameo's in movies, a monument one may say. you could take a cab to the club. enjoy the show for a couple hours, maybe enjoy the buffet and make your connecting flight.

Unfortunately nothing. There's not enough time for you to leave the airport and go anywhere exciting or worth the while.

you wont be able to leave the airport with that amount of time but LAX has some ok shopping and a couple of good bars. If you are into it there is a good sports bar. have a cold one for me!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's barely enough time to get out of the airport and then back in again.
It's not enough time to do anything but hit the airport bar.

Go to In and Out Burger, its close to the terminal and you must have an In and Out Burger!

drink a couple of beers in the airport (customs are going to use to much time to take a trip in L.A.)
