I've recently permed my hair for the first time and don't really know much about maintenance. I would like to get suggestions on maintenance/style and basic hair care tips. thanks !

what kind of perm is it for afro american hair it would be more moister for finer hair it would be more washing and keeping products that contain alchol away from the hair and that goes for all perms. o yeah you gotta keep it conditioned and go in for regualr touch ups even if its just to wash for all every 3months! hope i helped

You never want to brush it dry as you will soon find out nothing good comes with it. You will make a afro on your head and it won't feel too good brushing through the curls. Second you always want to put something in it, whether it be mousse (Paul Mitchell makes a 2 nice mousses if you feel your dry use the Scalpting Foam meduim hold or if not use the Extra body firm hold) or it can be a gel (Matrix Biolage makes a good one its called Gelee) or it can be a cream (Matrix also makes a cream called Curl Life leaves your hair soft with alittle bit of definition or use Rusk Wired has a pretty good hold) You also need to use at least a few squirts of hair spray if you like the pump use Paul Mitchells fast drying sculpting spray or soft spray or if you like areosole use Rusk Weightless or Weightless plus. You may desire to use a defusser which you can usually buy with most blowdryers in walmart target etc or you can find a defusser at one of those store or a beauty supply store open to non hairdressers (also known as the public) Also if you are noticing some access frizz you might need a shine serum (the frizz is being caused from the hair shaft being swollen from the chemicals of the perm that allowed the hair shaft to change from straight to curly) i would suggest using Joico K Pak Shine Serum its a recontructer line to help with the perm as well as the frizz also try their reconstructer conditioner. Any shampoo or conditioner in the professional lines that are color safe are fine for your hair . .now i wouldn't suggest using anything from drug stores as a result you may lose your perm do yo harsh soaps. good luck hope all this helps

I would agree with mz. bubblegum's answer, but I would also add that when your perm starts to go flat or collapse, frequently all you need is a little trim to get some of the weight off the hair and make it pop back up again.
