The closest would be Viet Nam or Somalia. In those wars, like Iraq, there were enough troops for security OR for fighting insurgents, but not enough for both. An additional similarity all three wars share is that American involvement became politicized and in doing so the focus became not how to win the war but rather became a game of politics.

War is War whether it is Iraq any other thing. From ages every single war is fought for the fancy, thrust and whims and fancies of the rulers. The face of Kings, Queens is changed to Senators, Presidents, Prime Ministers. But the sufferers are always the general public. Even in the chess game which has close resemblance to war the King never dies it's only soldiers who die. War is the most heinous thing on humanity.

If you look at the manner of combat that the insurgent fight, it is not a direct war but a series of guerrilla maneuvers to ty to weaken the military presence. Combat against the VC is similar in the fact that they used similar tactics to fight American forces. Since they know that direct fighting will result in their being completed wiped out, they employed these ideas to drag out the fight and pile up the number of casualties on our side.
Basically, look at any guerrilla warfare scenario from various points in history and you will see common threads throughout, such as roadside bombs/mine usage, mobile forces consisting of small numbers of heavily armed fighters, and the use of collateral damage in their favor, even when they are the cause of many deaths and injuries to their countrymen.
However, Iraq is NOT another Vietnam. There is more in common with the riots in Central America back in the 60's as well as the Cuban revolution when Castro took over and much of the fighting seen between the nations in the Middle East well before the War in Iraq.

The USSR invasion of Afghanistan in the 80's i believe would come close to the Iraq war by comparison.
Even with more fire power and a larger well trained army, the USSR was unable to destroy the mujaheddin that fought them all through out their invasion of Afghanistan, simply due to terrain and guerrilla war fare.

Certainly not Vietnam. The differences are too vast to bridge. The only comparable thing between Vietnam and Iraq is the Democrats and media striving to support our enemies and dismissing the freedom of the peoples we support.
It's more comparable to the fight against the IRA in Northern Ireland or the fight against the Shining Path communist guerilla-terrorists in Peru. Or, better yet, the French in Algeria.

Each war is different. Why try to compare? In WWII the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. In this one, most people forget, they used planes to kill people in this country.
