This is a common problem - sometimes refered to as white coat syndrome(ie the thought of a clinical proceedure puts your BP up)
If your Dr Knows your blood pressure is up it can be arranged (usually through outpatient dept at hospital) that you can have a portable cuff to wear for 24 hours.you even wear it in bed- not so comfy but it does give an accurate picture of your BP.
BP is now recognised as an importent factor in health - hopefully you will get this sorted out.
P.S
my BP goes up at the mere thought of being taken- and I am a nurse!

You may also try thinking good thoughts. I know it sounds silly, but I have had high blood pressure for 14 1/2 years now. When I think it is up a little and they are going to take it...I try doing the deep breaths with good calming thoughts. Depending on the meter....dont look at it until it is done if it makes you nervous. Just think of it squeezing your arm to make you healthy. I hope this will be of a little help at least.

First le the attendant know the situation. Request to sit unmoved and without speaking for 15 minutes. Request the hand meter be used. If you can have someone go with you all the better. It has been proven that emotional support can calm and reudce blood pressure. It can be further reduced if you hold a person's hand. During the fifeteen min waiti time. ALlow yourself to breath evenly. Not overly deep jus tslow and even. Even close your eyes and allow yourself to almost feel as if about to sleep. You will be amazed how low it can go. Ultimately if you can do this ofr 5 days consecutively, it can aleiviate much anxiety and give u practice to succeed.

I have the same problem caused by anxiety. So when I go to the doctors I have a high reading. But on a 24 hour monitor it reads overall, normal. I would try and stay off the salt, plenty of exercise and don't worry about your blood pressure so much.
I think we are all becoming a little obsessed with our health these days.

That,s known as white blood pressure well known condition when nervous, get a wrist monitor less stressful chose a regular time of day (every day ), most record up to 60 times, so getting used to the equipment, and your nerves should settle down, don't scare your self with the results at first

Borrow a portable machine from your surgery, take the readings over a two week period, three times a day, I think you will find when you have got used to the band tightening, and you are in your own environment, you will be relaxed enough to get a proper consistant reading, I suffer from white coat syndrome, and it works for me, brings the reading right down.

Your not alone with this problem......I've found the best way to monitor your blood pressure is to invest in a Bp unit which can be purchased for less than £10 from any Lloyds pharmacy......monitor it morning and night for a week in the comfort of your own home without any pressure and you will have an accurate reading.
good luck.

not a good idea to get one at home as this will only increaseyour pressure the promlem is not the machine but the results it gives you worry about the results try to tell yourselt you are fine which you are you are alive and got to gp so chill and think of all the people who are worse than you it may take your mind of your own pressure enough to drop it

Yes,I also have exactly the same problem. My doctor says this is called the 'white coat syndrome', which is why she does the test two or three times! Try to find a relaxation technique that works for you, there are many you can try and one of them is sure to help.
