First off, lets not forget that the Land Rover brand was first started by a man who madified a Jeep Willy's. So therefore Jeep was number 1.
I've owned a 1996 Cherokee Classic, 1999 Cherokee Sport, currently 2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo, and my gf drives a 2005 Liberty (Cherokee in USA) Renegade. We love our Jeeps, they go anywhere and do anything. They will drive circles around RR and little chik SUVs caught in deep snow.
I have driven a 2002 Land Rover Discovery and what a crap box. It reminds me of an older Jaguar with ten million buttons (the cruise control switch is an Audobon symbol) which is strange. The V8i I had was very hunky, rolled like it was on its way over, slow to start, heavy to brake, and the seating made you feel like your lap was where the bottom of the window was. Kind of like sitting in your car on a barstool.
Range Rovers today are simply luxury SUVs like Lexus and BMW where they can go offroad, but they are more for light street driving than heavy duty. I dont know many people who would take an $80,000 base price in US RR out to the badlands and cruise around. Unless they did it with a lit cigar, the window down and a few $1,000 bills on fire in their hand.
Jeeps are rugged, comfortable, and buily like brick S***houses. They can go anywhere! Name another SUV that has a section in their owners manuals about Fording a River!

I have had a 1995 Cherokee Sport and 2 1996 Cherokee Sports. The '95 was outstanding both on and off road. The '96s both had a problem with the steering column the dealer was never able to fix. Overall i think the Cherokee is a very good vehicle that will give you years of performance both on an off road. BTW I am now looking for a good Cherokee again. LOL

The Jeep that you own is 7 years newer than mine. Mine is a 96 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.0 Liter inline 6 engine. Great engines and very few problems other than caused by me offroading in it. I have 190,000 miles on the original engine and transmission and it still runs and drives just as good as it did new. Jeep's are easily modified for any offroad needs, plus great onroad abilities also. Pretty good gas mileage for a truck too. I average 28MPG and my jeep is full time 4WD (Quadra-Trac). I've been offroad in this jeep in 2 feet of mud and never even needed 4Low. The full time 4WD in these rigs will get you practacally anywhere you want to go, granted you know how to drive. Do all of your regular maintenance i.e. oil and filter changes, tuneups, and all repairs as needed, your Jeep will give you many years off use. And its always fun pulling guys out of mud holes that have a modified truck or SUV with a lift kit in your stock jeep, it really makes them look bad. Enjoy your Jeep.

The Cherokee was the granddaddy of Americas small sport-utes and what bugs it had Chrysler pretty well worked out. If it has the 6 cyl engine, its based on the old AMC 7 main bearing design and is near bullet proof with proper maintenance. The only faults were some door fit (leaks) at the end of it's run.

Ignore the previous chaps answer. You are happy with it, he has not got one, why listen to him?
Off road they are one of the best you can get. What 4*4 voted best small 4*4 of the year 2005. This car ( called Liberty in the states ) has won many off road awards from unbiased sources. Range Rovers are nowhere near as good off road as Land Rovers, but they are for the road going masses. Log on to www.jeep.co.uk , who are soon launching a free off road day for existing and potential buyers, absolutely free of charge. See for yourself, do not listen to idiots.
