I think they do to be polite, but sometimes it does make you want to say, "here's your sign".LOL

This accomplishes a few things.
1) It shows some concern for your fellow man.
2) The person can find out if the injured party needs medical attention or if there is anything at all they can do to help out.

Most of the time when people ask you if you are all right, they have sensed that something is actually wrong. They are waiting to see how you answer them so they can respond to you with help. You shouldn't see it as sinical or anything. You should see it as someone being concerned and wanting to help you if at all possible. Don't be afraid to open up to your family, friends and trusted love ones. Who knows, maybe God has placed them there to comfort you.

I think many people just ask to be polite, and I can't stand that. Often when I do things like that (and I do them often because I'm a big klutz) I just need to vent the pain and I am alright.

they ask you that in the hope that you will say 'yes' and they can leave you alone without having to actually do anything, listen or say anything to help you. Most of the time other peoples problems are just a straight up pain in the a r s e... nasty bunch us people aren't we?

Well, I think they really do care, and are also a little frightened when they see someone, especially someone close, who is in pain. They have to say something, and so they say, "Are you all right?", probably to reassure themselves, as well as to express concern for the other person.

It is an incomplete sentence. What they really mean is: "Are you alright? Do you need help?"
Frankly, sometimes they really don't want to help, but feel it would be rude to say nothing.
At least they are acknowledging your pain.

They're brainwashed into asking that because that's what everyone else does.
And most people when asked say they're OK. Go figure.

well, they ask that to break the ice--it's the obvious conversation starter in this situation. what else would they say, "wow that totally look like it hurt!" now that's pretty insensitive....
