Firstly, go to this link

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx

and run the Windows validation assistant. This will tell you if you have a genuine copy of Windows.

If your WIndows is not genuine:
1. Report him to your local Trading Standards
2. Complete the form here:

you should remove that copy of XP from your pc as soon as possible (you could be fined!!) I hope you have an original copy of XP, just install that and youll be fine

or: insert your own (legal) copy of Windows XP instalation CD restart your pc (make sure it boots up from CD) then select "repair" windows will now check the install, when you ar finished insert your own key and problems solved

NEVER give your pc to him agian!! just go to the store where you bought it (or a good pc store) probably they can fix it cheaper then £ 70,-

Report him to microsoft. They used to do an offer where they would give you a free key for doing this, don't know if they still do.

If you have the original key for XP from before he reinstalled it you may be able to change the key to this. This may be on a sticker on your PC or on the original disks that came wit it.

Yes run the Validation program on the Windows site and see if it is a genuine copy.If windows recognises it OK you will be able to run updates etc.If it rejects it you are going to have problems updating in the future.

you need to report him, a boot leg copy of xp will give you problems, your system will not be able to authenticate the program during some applications, in the future use more reputable tech's

report him. Doing that is highly illegal.
Get your money back too. That kind of work is slip-shod
