You are right...when people are basically anonymous they let their bad sides show sometimes...there are still some nice people out there....you just have to look.

Hi..I think it is because there is no face to blame for the ignorance.I don't think that the average "civil" face longs to scream vulgarities but I do think there are faceless strangers who want to see reactions. It is very different for one to read words and be offended than for one to hear or speak the ones and give physical body for repercussion..probably alot less painful too.Personally I think that all interaction with another should be as gracious as possible but I have found the web only promises access to information. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to surf the web nor a 3rd grade mentality so when we log on we must be ready for such.Either or. Post your opinions and put your grace out there and maybe someone will catch on.That's the only way to change it.

A lot of people are just rude and ignorant though some, as you have suggested, probably use the web and a method of expressing the rude and ignorant aspects of their personality which they can't express in the real world. I doubt it will every change all the time there are rude ignorant people around. Fortunately, in the same way that it is easier to be rude and ignorant to a faceless individual it is also much much easier to ignore it. Perhaps is carries a social advantage. People have an opportunity to release their more destructive emotions in a relatively safe environment. After all if you don't like what somebody is writing it is very simple to choose not to read it. It's quite difficult to ignore words actually spoken to you.

It's a way of being able to release without having to worry about fallout. You are right however, gracious behavior should always be forefront, whether it is in person or not. I am guilty of being less than kind while on the net and I admit it. I might feel better at the time of releasing my frustration at the time but there have been some times I feel bad about it.

There is a feeling on anonymity among web users that makes them way things that they wouldn't otherwise say in normal situations. That is why you see a lot of rude comments.
As for being ingnorant, I guess you would have to blame that on todays educational system.

Anonymity is a double-edged sword when it comes to an online community. While anonymity may allow people to feel more free and disinhibited to discuss otherwise embarrassing or stigmatizing topics, it can also be a community’s biggest enemy. Anonymity allows people to hide behind their computers while saying whatever they want with little ramification. Psychologists know that online community is far more disinhibited than face-to-face communication: (see these references:)

I agree with you, people DO hide behind their computer screens, but, unfortunatley, some are like that without them, too.
