I live in Singapore almost directly on the Equator. Would Ragdolls and Maine Coons living in the constant 'summer' temperatures here develop shorter coats permanently or would a breed like a Maine Coon just suffer in this heat and not be suitable here?

There are crazy people here who insist on owning Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds and the poor things are simply not meant to be here. I wonder if the same would apply to cats.

Thank you

We have a Maine Coon and a half-Persian in my home, and yeah, they both do a pretty good job of losing their coat when the weather gets warmer - both of them get pretty scruffy :) Our Maine Coon more so, I think.

Oh, he doesn't really get a shorter coat - it's more he loses all the short fluffy hairs and just keeps the thin, long layer. He seems pretty okay in hot weather - he still plays and chases mice outside and all that; he does a lot better than our Persian, who won't go outside and just lays around. So, I imagine a Maine Coon would be fine where you live.

One thing to keep in mind, though - a Maine Coon in his hot weather coat isn't very pretty! Don't look much at all like the picture you'll see in cat books. I don't know - they're bulky cats, and with that and the thin, long coat they get to looking kind of feral and mangy, LOL. But they're wonderful, fun cats; you don't have to get them for their looks.

Good luck!

I have a Maine Coon and his coat has always been and always will be very thick and shaggy. When it gets hot here, he is very uncomfortable. You can tell because he's lazier than usual. It's a chore for him to leave his spot in front of the fan even to eat. I would not suggest getting a Maine Coon unless he'll be living in an air conditioned home. I will say though - Maine Coon's are awesome and I've never had a more loving pet in my life.

the temperment between the two are really close. both are really laid back and easy to love. i've owned both breeds and would recommend either. ragdolls are more cuddly while maine coons, although loving, are independant in nature. the choice is yours and adopting is an honorable thing. given a little time an adult cat will come around and you won't have any of the kitten stresses and messes. i wouldn't worry about getting attacked by either breed. go slow and be patient it'll work.

I'm from TX (it gets to be 100+ here) and my sister owns both breeds. Her Maine Coon does fairly well, he tends to shed his undercoat hair, however her ragdoll prefers the air conditioned home. I think it would be okay to own a longhaired cat in warm climates, so long as they can find some relief from the heat. Besides, (aside from my sister) I would never let such an expensive breed outside where it could be stolen or become lost
