It seems that there's an unspoken rule in the world to mask intelligence. Perhaps it's out of fear that they'll be misunderstood. Or maybe it's more that they think people will feel as though by speaking properly, they are trying to prove they are better. It's odd.

I used to speak like a moron, my mother would NOT put up with "improper grammar", or "poor English", she would correct me every time, one day it all kicked in. You should always speak properly, it shows a good upbringing, and more importantly, it shows that we are educated, and care enough to increase our vocabulary, so that we may continue to learn new things. This is very important in life on the few occasions that it needs to be displayed, LIKE AT A JOB INTERVIEW !

My husband's first wife's family does not know how to speak properly and they always made fun of him because he would speak proper grammar. It is always the ignorant people that make fun of the ones that can actually speak well.

Because most of everyone else does not speak properly and they have to go along with what ever everyone else does.

i really don't think it's the "in" thing anymore. i've gotten some emails from people and i'm not even sure it's in english. it seems, especially if you are a young person today, if you spoke properly, you would be made fun of by your friends...if they understood what you were saying in the first place.

When we hear someone who does not speak well their sore thumb really sticks out and they don't even know it.
A beautiful well dressed woman using a double negative? Sheesh!

Because they'd stick out like a sore thumb in today's society. One must have a great deal of self-assurance to do so.

The proper use of English has come to be seen as a sort of snobbery.

Possibly because they fear that they will say something that is not "proper". The pressure to do it correctly could be too much
