If you mean the older type beetles(air cooled engines in the rear) they didn't come in diesel. The diesel is the Rabbit which is a water cooled front engined front wheel vehicle. 2 different vehicles.
VW bug drives like a VW bug. I can't explain it. However, I would (and did) take my bug up roads that only 4x4's had gone in the bush. Never thought twice about it. 15" wheels were stock.
My diesel bunny, has 13" wheels and does not clear that many things in the bush. Which is funner? The bug? Which goes farther. The diesel should because it is diesel. But if you had a gas bunny, it would probably die sooner than a bug. And you get 100,000 miles on it. The bunny body will have rusted away at this point, they are just not made as good.

Well, I have a VW Beetle TDI (turbo diesel injected) and it has 90 hp, which is a lot for a diesel vehicle. It screems off the line and have had her past 120 mph on the expressway. It only vibrates when it first starts up in the cold. When she warms up, you would never think it was a diesel. The biggest issue with diesel is buying the fuel from a place that gets diesel fuel delivered frequently. Nothing like buying old diesel - it will cause the enging to lag until you put fresh stuff in. I always buy from a local truck stop.
I get over 800 miles per tank and it's a 16.5 gallon tank. That's 48.5 miles per gallon! On this website, www.tdiclub.com, you can read posts where people get even better milage - some over 1000 miles per tank! And people are posting that they are at 250, 300, 350 thousand miles on their diesels!
Even though diesel is more expensive, the costs are the same for running and repairs as a gas VW. I own a Jetta and a Cabrio and go to the same shop for repairs with all 3.

'Driving better' is a broad term. Diesels vibrate more than gasoline engines and are harder to start in the cold. No doubt VW has tamed these problems but be aware you have some computers under the dash doing the 'taming'. Take care of them. Diesels are more thermodynanically efficient and thus have better mileage, but the fuel costs slightly more. Overall you do save $.
In general a diesel car is a good buy if you have a VERY long commute and intend to keep the car a long time. It also offers the possibility of using biodiesel.
If you intend to drive it and keep it in a typical fashion, a gasoline engine and good driving practices will be just as cost efficient.

I haven't done any reading on these, but I would bet the performance (power) is lacking. You may want to test drive one to be sure. Diesel powered autos have special service requirements also. Check THAT out too before deciding.
Good Luck.
