The difference between a pastor and priest are as follows:
The term pastor is synonymous with the terms bishop and shepherd in the Bible (I Timothy 3:1-11; I Peter 2:25; Ephesians 4:11). The term means "overseer or undershepherd" The pastor's duties are to lead the local church in spiritual matters as he follows Christ himself.
The term priest is found primarily in the Old Testament and is an office instituted by God. Early in the Bible, men served as priests to God in families (Job 1:5; Genesis 8:20-22) until God instituted the Law and created the High Priest position for a nation (Exodus 28:1-43). The purpose of the priest was for a man to represent a group of people/a person to the Lord God. In Old Testament times, men could not represent themselves (their sins) to God, but needed someone to do it for them. When Christ died on the Cross of Calvary and completed His work on Earth, He made every believer a priest, in the sense that any believer could now go to the Lord in prayer and repent of sins (Matt. 27:51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45; I Timothy 2:5). Christ is considered our Great High Priest (Hebrews 3:1-2; 4:14-15) as He brings our needs to the Father for us; however the office of priest, as concerning Catholicism, is abolished, as every believer is a priest to God.
The Priests of the Catholic Church, if considered in the same regard as pastors, do not have the liberties as stated above for the following reasons:
01. Gambling: All believers are to be good stewards of their funds (Matthew 12:16-48); if this is the case, the pastor is especially to be an example of this. Gambling is risking substance against an uncertain outcome for possible benefit, which is not good stewardship.
02. Smoking: All believers should take care of their body as it is the temple of the Holy Spirit (meaning the Holy Spirit resides within us, so we should be the best we can be) (I Cor. 3:16-17). This is one of the most seldom adhered to principles, since as Americans we partake of food and other luxuries that are bad for our bodies. As always, however, the pastor should be the example for other believers.
03. Wives: According to I Timothy 3:2, the pastor must be the husband of one wife. Priests are stated to not be allowed to marry, but how can he relate to families and their issues if he does not have one of his own? (I Timothy 4:1-3).
04. Drinking: The Bible condemns drunkeness and drinking of alcohol as a beverage in all its forms. The pastor especially must not be given to this sinful act (I Timothy 3:3; Proverbs 23:29-35)

>>What freedoms do Pastors of a Catholic church have such as gamling, smoking, wives, drinking? just curious?<<
Some priests are married, and others choose to be "eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 19:12). Priests promise not to marry after ordination. Gambling, smoking, and drinking are all allowed in moderation.
>>and what is the difference in being called a pastor or priest of a catholic church?<<
All pastors are priests, but not all priests are pastors. Pastors are priests entrusted with the pastoral care of a parish, as opposed to priests that do other work, such as teach. The head priest of a parish is referred to as the pastor, and the other priest(s) in the parish as the associate pastor(s).

A pastor of a Catholic parish is the priest who is responsible for the parish.
Other priests working in the parish are usually called associate pastors.
Pastors have no extra freedoms than other priests but many extra responsibilities. Catholic priests do not, of course, get married.
With love in Christ.

well firstly a pastor is within a protestant church and a priest is within the Catholic church....Priests of a catholic church are not allowed to marry ever....if they want to marry because they fall in love they must leave the priesthood and start a new life.....there is nothing to stop a priest from gambling, drinking or smoking apart from the bible...and many priests do smoke and drink in moderation....they are still human afterall !!!

Why don't you make an appointment to have a meeting with a Catholic Priest and ask him all your questions? You will get the straight scoop from him rather than speculation from us here!
