With sleep, quantity and quality go hand in hand. If there is not enough quantity, you can't achieve REM sleep. If there is no quality, you could sleep for 12 hours and not feel rested because again, you didn't achieve REM sleep. The sleeping cycle must be 8 hours. During that time, the stages of sleeping move from being shallow to really deep to progressively shallower, all the while interrupted by 30 minute segments of REM sleep. At the end of the 8 hour period, you are no longer achieving stage 4 sleep, but DO have REM. The shallower sleep combined with REM provide us our "remember-able" dreams in the morning. You both win. No REM, no quality. No quantity, no REM.

in your case, quality is worth a shot. Seems that you already tried the quantity route, and it just doesn't seem to work between the both of you, on account of distance and responsibilities. You say he tried being down South; therefore, he made some sort of an attempt at making the relationship work. He tried it your way, and he wasn't happy with it. Maybe the next step is trying to do things his way...

It depends on the person.
I know university professors who teach in a university in one country and their spouses teach in a university in another country, for example. That does not seem to have dampened their love or the depth of their feelings.
Although they are rather smart people. Perhaps a preference for "quality" is the mark of a highly intelligent mind.

When it comes to a relationship you really need both. I'm not saying that long distance relationships don't work, but they need more effort because it's a huge strain in a relationship to never see your partner. In this case, you need to decide which is more important to you, your boyfriend or your responsibilites? If it's your boyfriend then you should move up to him. And if it's your responsibilites then things probably won't work out with your boufriend. I hope everything works out for you.
