I have an autistic son who is seven years old. He can't talk but I am quite sure he understands more than I realise at times. I have complete trust in God to take him home as an innocent soul so I am not fussed about him jumping through hoops. He holds hands with us when we say grace and anything beyond that is unreasonable and impractical to expect. God loves him and that love is shown to him through me. That is my job and I strive to do it well. All the best with your difficult circumstances.

I would find it doubtful that he has any real deep understanding of God as such, just as much of the rest of the things in life that require any deep understanding would seem to pretty much go right past him without his knowledge or concern. If God is a just God that of course means nothing to him since he would know that it's beyond him. There could also be an argument that many in society that are incapable of even grasping the concept of God due to some mental issue often seem closest to him since in their more lucid moments they seem to possess a kindness that most of us are incapable of. In the end when I think of autistics and others like them in any religious aspect I only thank God they were born today rather than centuries ago when our complete lack of understanding regarding these issues caused rather harsh treatment of some of them by so-called loving Christians.

Some people believe that autists are normal people born without souls.
Anyway, chances are that your brother lacks the ability to build an understanding of any deep religious ideas. What does that mean for his hopes of salvation? I can't say.

Only God knows them as they truly are. Leave the Judging up to Him. Anyone who has a learning disability or is handicapped in this way God is taking care of them and the good side of it is that he is not a partaker of the evil and sin in this world. I DO NOT mean this to be cruel, but only God knows and Only God

historically many cultures believed that what one person would call "damaged goods" another would call "Gods chosen" some would care for , treat with utmost reverence , others would revile and kick out or kill. whether they believe in a God is mainly up to what they are exposed to. we seem to think that just because they cant communicate like we can that they are unable to understand. a child or an adult with any form of disability doesnt make them any less human then we are. he doesnt need to be able to say "i believe in God" all he needs is to be able to touch a kitten in a soft way, smile at some hidden thought, breathe in the scent of a flower, depending on your beliefs God isnt just someone you go to church to hear about, you dont need to be able to read to know whats in the bible, each of us experiences God in our own way with our own perceptions of him. your brother carries God within him just as you do. who knows perhaps he is closer to God then either you or I . in any case its my belief that living the "golden rule" showing someone understanding, compassion, loving, holding out a helping hand is teaching someone about Gods love, without words. he may "live in his own little world" but that world touches yours and what you do with it touches him. i dont know any autistics personally but i did have an uncle jimmy who was diagnosed as mentally retarded 55 years ago. yes he did have the mental capacity of a 4 year old all his life but for as long as i knew him he carried a plain old little driveway stone in his pants pocket and would sometimes play with it singing " i got god in my pocket , i got god in my pocket " in a little boy voice for hours on end. ask him if you could see, touch it , he would hand it to you saying " james is sharing God with you" bet you anything that your brother not only knows God but knows him better then a "normal" person ever could.

well, I would think that since God did say that he would take care of the least of these that he at least know the love of God. but honestly, there is no way for us to completely know for sure

you don't have to worry, God will take care of your brother. If he can understand he will make his own choice, if he can't understand...God knows.
