Tryptophan, but it is just an urban legend that it makes you sleepy. The reason you feel sleepy after a big turkey dinner has more to do with the large consumption of food than anything in the turkey.

Turkey does contain L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid with a documented sleep inducing effect. L-tryptophan is used in the body to produce the B-vitamin, niacin. Niacin, in turn, is used to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that exerts a calming effect and regulates sleep. However, L-tryptophan needs to be taken on an empty stomach and without any other amino acids or protein in order to make you drowsy. There's lots of protein in a serving of turkey and it's probably not the only food on the table.

it incredibly is a declare made with the aid of some examine--they say that the amino acid Tryptophan (reported "trip-tuh-fin") in turkey reasons drowsiness. even however there's a excessive volume of Tryptophan in turkey, it incredibly is such as the quantity in different chicken, so it incredibly is a disputed declare. different examine tutor that it is not turkey on Thanksgiving that makes you sleepy, however the different factor dishes that come alongside with it, excessive in carbohydrates (candy corn, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and so on. that reasons a excessive launch of insulin--as a effect, making one sleepy after ingesting all that..) for my area, i don't incredibly have confidence that ingesting turkey makes you sleepy. The correlation between Tryptophan and turkey inducing drowsiness is uncorroborated. it is only an excuse to sidestep admitting that human beings OVEREAT on Thanksgiving. an entire abdomen is all that it incredibly is. it is the actual sleep inducer.

Tryptophan. It's an amino acid. it's good for deep, calming slumber.
Enjoy.
I recommend spaghetti carbonara as an alternative to turkey for holiday dinners. Much more American!

You don't. You get sleepy after eating the carbs in the stuffing, potatoes and pumpkin pie. My husband doesn't eat carbs and he is never sluggish.
