She turned the money over to the police and they found the owner of the money was a deceased man, who owed Social Security, and so on. My question is... Would you give the money to authorities or keep it???

I'm not sure what I would do. I've always lived by the rule of Karma and I'd like to think I would turn it in, but after hearing stories such as these, I'm not so sure I would. I think I would hold on to it, put an add in the paper and see who responded. If it's that much, I may even contact the local media and make it well known. IF nobody claims it within 90 days, then I'd do something good with that money. Afterall, it came as a blessing, it should remain a blessing.

Keeping money you find is a criminal offence (At least in the U K) knows as 'Stealing by Finding'. Any money found should be handed in to the police and the circumstances reported. Unclaimed cash is returned to the finder after 30 days.

The moral issue here, of course, is what effect the loss of the cash would have on the person who donated the clothes. It could belong to an elderly person who stashed it away in what they considered a 'safe' place, forgot about it and thus lost it. Possibly the clothes were donated without the knowledge of the owner of the cash. Thing is that if you kept it and the donor knew he had left it there and came to claim it back you could be facing a jail sentence by keeping it. Even if the finder could not be identified it could create lots of adverse publicity and potential losses of future donations when it came out.

Main thing is: How would you feel if it was your cash and was all you had and some scumbag stole it?

My advice. Always hand it in.

Well if I didn't know who the money originally belonged to I probably would keep it. But, if it was with some identification then I would definetly give it back.

It is called "ill gotten gains"

I kept some ill gotten gains once.

Then shortly thereafter I had a car repair bill that came to $20 more than the ill gotten money...

Isn't that funny?!! I thought so...So I don't think it matters too much.. It's going to cost $20 as a penalty..

Karma, did it to me!! Dohh

Wow....$7000!!
That would test anyones moral stance.

I would have to wrestle with my conscience but think i would feel too guilty keeping it so would hand it over to the authorities or the charity shop.

How much money did you talk about? 100 or 50 dollars?

If it was with the donated clothing, I'd assume that it too was a donation and should be used for charitable purposes
