I was self conscious about my teeth for most of my adult life. I wanted braces but like you i was worried about cost and being laughed at. In the end i was lucky enough to come into some money so without thinking about it too much i made an appoint with my dentist and got the ball rolling. I didnt let myself think about the next step and just took it as it came, i sort of figured that i was so nervous of how bad my teeth were anyways that braces couldnt be any worse! I had clear ones and they cost £1,500 but i also needed lots of prep work so reckon about £1,000 is more realistic. At first i was worried but no one laughed, if anything everyone started telling me there own teeth stories or would say how great i was going to look. I was surprised at how supportive everyone was and i got no negative comments. After about a month i was completely happy to wear my braces an wasnt at all phased. 2 of my friends have had them fitted now because i made them realise theres nothing to worry about. If you can afford clear ones then i think they do look a little less obvious but if i had to go trough it agagin and metal was the only option it wouldnt bother me (honestly)I had them removed last year and i LOVE my smile now, im always grinning! Worth every penny, go for it!!
P.s Im nearly 32, started treatment when i was 29.
P.Ps girls in braces look cute!

My other half is in the middle of having a brace as an adult as she didn't want to have one as a kid.........she opted for the metal one as the one she has works quicker than the ceramic/clear alternative and she reckons the less time the best.
She hasn't even had a comment about the brace, even from friends - people just don't seem to take much notice. When they do notice (after she points it out) most people seem to be more interested in the multi-thousand £ cost involved.
There are braces that you can have which go on the inside of the teeth and aren't visible although I understand that these can be quite sore initially (outside are too, but less I'm told) and cause more problems speaking, they're also more expensive, but definitely the less obvious option.
Finally, when its done I believe that you can have a wire on the inside of the teeth for the long term, instead of a retainer, to stop them moving back again!
Good luck with it all.

I too have this problem, I had braces for years as a kid, all fine and well til my wisdom teeth came in and pushed them together, I still have great teeth ( yeah even for a Brit! LOL! ) but feel a few are slightly twisted, my dentist says it is not major or problematic but I am getting braces again this year to fix it. I looked at both options and decided to go for metal due to the cost also it is viewed differently in adulthood a few of my friends and workmates wear metal braces as adults and there has been nothing said to ant of them. Hope this helps you a little. J.

Well I can't tell you how it feels because I've never worn them but I've known several women who had braces later in life. One of them was a buddy's mother who got them in her late 30's early 40's.
I would probably try and go with the clear one but if they do cost too much, the metal braces would be fine. Remember it's only for two years and cute's cute. Braces or not.

i wore a metal brace (not a retainer) when i was younger for a very short period of time. i dont know how they compare to a clear one but it isnt a very pleasant experience is it!? though i assume the downfalls are they same as wearing a clear one? - getting food caught in them (yuk), petruding mouth, getting cuts & sores on the inside of your mouth (they are quite scratchy) getting them tightened (ouch!) my teeth looked better before in my opinion. however as im now a confident adult, i would get them again and wear them with pride.

whatever colour u choose at least the end result will be worth it!! i no a male friend of mine who has a clear one which looks ok and my step- daughter has a metal one with superb funky coloured bands on them!! she can change them 2 what ever colour she likes. the people who ridicule u for wanting 2 feel more confident about yourself are not worth the air u breath!! dont let them worry u - its your body not theirs!! good luck xx

I hated the outside brace. I'd opt for the clear one.
