Alot of them are faking it to impress their ministers and congregation. First, they want the rest of the congregation to believe that God is somehow directly interacting with them and so this means that they are special or holy. Second, the ministers don't mind because it makes them feel good that their ministering or holiness is so strong that it can bring in God's presence. This will help convince the rest of the congregation that God is around but they can't feel it because they aren't "there" yet and should keep attending church and giving up their money.
A minister once said that he knew his congregation had some fakers in it because they never got the "holy ghost" at any other time except when at church. He asked them why didn't they get the Holy Ghost at work or in the supermarket?

I used to ask the same question, until it happened to me. I think some people are mislead and do fake it, but I think most are sincere. When it happens, its just something you can help. Its the holy spirit speeking to you. There are diffrent emotions that are experienced, overwelming joy, the passion to serve more intensly and the erg to repent and start new, are just some of the emotions that I myself have felt. Its truly amazing and moving its also a way of coming to realize our need for the Lord in our lives. My prayer for you is that you too may come to experience such an amazing connection with the lord.

We live in a dimension that is veiled from the spiritual realm. Not only could we not handle what we would see there but we are to make decisions on whether we want to spend eternity with God or not without physical proof. That's the test. When in church and in the correct frame of mind, God comes close and allows people to feel his presence. When that happens, there is a combination of joy at being made sure of his closeness which reveals the sad truth of the human condition and our own individual contributions to the bad things here through the sins we have committed. Thus we cry. If you study the ancient documents until you come to an understanding of the heart of God, you too will be overwhelmed not only by who he is but by who you are as his most important and precious creation. He wants you to come home to him at the end of your life but there is another being that wants to steal your soul from him and torture it because you allowed him to get you. These things are much bigger than you understand.

No, they really feel something. Religions thrive on exciting people emotionally. They are very practiced at stirring people's emotions. They use emotions to convert people and bind them to the church. That's why they push "faith", which at its core is emotion driving belief. The discourage reasoned thinking, because that it not their strong point. It is very effective, because humans have been emotional animals far longer than rational ones.

It's a psychological factor of the preacher slowly working them up during the sermon. Christians don't like hearing this, but it's just like Hitler working up his crowds into a frenzy with his skilled speeches. It's just like in "1984", where people go nuts with the broadcasts. Oh, what's the use, you won't believe what I'm telling you...

when i cry at church, home, ect. it is because of the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT. for example...when i need comfort due to the daily things going on in my life, i meditate on God and he send the HS to comfort me and reminds me that all is going to be well. i actually feels his arms around me. it is a awesome feeling. sometimes people speaks in tongues when they are talking to the Lord, some folks cry. it's just the way they talk to God. sometimes i cry when i do something for the Lord, and he puts a great feeling in my Heart & soul confirming that i did good, I cry. God Bless

I for one have cried in church. When you give your heart to Christ and accept what he has done for you it is a burden lifted that words cannot describe. IF you are serious about it. Why does a mother cry when she sees her new born child for the first time? It is a love that cannot be compared to anything on this earth to know that someone loved you enough to lay down His life for you when He did not have to do it. I could go on and on, but I hope with these few words that you know what I am saying.

I believe that when people are in a place where they can reflect and think in peace, they are apt to connect with their emotions and feel free to let the emotion flow. Whether it is crying for joy, happiness, sadness or elation...the cry is okay and that is why I think people cry when in church.
