We went out over the weekend with friends and he was rude and critical to me for basically the entire night. He'd say things which would embarrass me until i got pissed off and avoided him for the entire night. At the end of th night he comes to tell me bye, almost as if unaware of how much he hurt me, but I ignored him. he didn't call or anything for a day... i sent him a text calling him a jerk for the way he behaved and he responded saying 'ok that's fine i understand.' No apology. No let's talk. No anything.
I know in relationships we are supposed to resolve things but even though this has been the first time he's done anything remotely as awful as what he did, i really am not inclined to be the one to initiate a resolution. Am I wrong?
He wasn't drunk and I am not holding back any part of the story. From the time I showed up he was critical and made fun of everything I said and did.

YOU ARE PERFECTLY RIGHT NOT TO INITIATE A CONVERSATION OR ANYTHING ELSE. YOU TOLD HIM HOW YOU FEEL AND THAT HE HURT YOU. IF HE CARES ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP IT'S HIS TURN NOW TO MAKE A MOVE! SO BACK OFF, AND JUST WAIT TO SEE HIS REACTION. DON'T CALL HIM, OR TEXT HIM. THERE SHOULD BE A REASON WHY HE PUT YOU DOWN IN FRONT OF PEOPLE THE OTHER NIGHT!! HE WILL CALL, I AM SURE. AND WHEN HE DOES, LET HIM TALK. YHEN TELL HIM YOUR POINT OF YOU AND DEFINITELY REQUIRE AN EXPLANATION OF HIS BEHAVIOUR.

Well seeing as you didn't do anything it seems like he is looking for an escape route and that was it. So try talking to him about it and get an explanation. If he doesn't want to talk or is rude about it let his sorry a** go. Don't put yourself in A situation where the person belittles you. I really think he doesn't care though, because no man in his right mind would embarrass and treat his girlfriend that way. He wants everyone know what he got and what they don't and if he wasn't doing that honey you need to check into getting someone who does.

wow. one of the qualities a girl would like in a guy is that he treats her right and if he makes a mistake that he at least knows how to say sorry, if he really cares it shouldn't be too hard. But well, since he says it's ok, and that he "understands" when you are trying to explain to him how he was a jerk. You might as well tell him to understand another thing. You. have. been. dumped.
If he isn't treating you right. He's not worth your time.

if he humiliated you in public, then to heck with him. you deserve better then that, find a real man who will treat you with the upmost respect no matter if your in public or alone toghether. No one deserves to be treated like that.. tell him good bye, and mean it. find someone else who will be good for you and respect you for the person you are. don't stoop down to that kind of guy. I'd say that kind of man, but he is by no reason worthy of being called a man. A real man wouldn't treat you that way.. get rid of him now..
don't waste any more energy on him. Don't sell yourself short.
you deserve to be treated better. and don't settle for anything less.

Confront him about it. If he won't apologise or at least offer an explanation for his bad behaviour, then you know not to waste any more of your precious time on an inconsiderate, rude jerk!

Leave him, if he does not know how to respect your sentiments. Don't feel hurt because you know what you are and be positive, don't think over his comments tooo much, try to forget his comments.
