18 is a little old to start, but by no means too old. The costs varies. I started at 25 (2 years ago). What will costs you money is headgear, bag gloves, sparring gloves, shoes and instructional videos. Good head gear will cost you $35-$50, bag gloves $55-$80, sparring gloves about the same and for good shoes you can probably get away with spending $50. Now I will tell you that some facilities provide these things for you, but I am little funny about using things that combine my sweat and DNA with someone elses. But thats just me. Handwraps and mouthpeices cost next to nothing. Instructional videos were a big part of my development defensively and strategically speaking. Go get beginner videos istructing you on a basic 1-2, and footwork. They are the foudation for it all. Try to go out and buy some Abolene. You rub it on your arms, chest and torso to make you sweat. You lose weight that way and maximize the burn of your workout.

Also watch alot of boxing. Its very helpful to watch boxers that have some of the same strengths that you feel that you have. But be carefull, because some of the pros will get you @$*$ed up trying to imitate them. At their level, sometimes the fundamentals and basics are abandoned. For example, Ali was incredibly gifted as an athlete. Emulating him will get hurt..........especially is you have a seasoned opponet that knows what they are doing. Watch guys like Maurice Green (jab), Kermit Cintron (use of combinations), Shane Mosely (footwork) and Oscar De La Hoya (every damn thing).

But the cost of training varies. It only costs me $20 a month to train and almost everyone in the gym is pro (except me) and the trainers are ex-boxers and professionals themselves. It just depends. All I can tell you is when you find a place, if you are paying more than $30 a month. make damn sure you can get as much one on one instruction as you need. I also recommend a hole in the wall gym. If cost is a concern, the less state of the art GARBAGE they have, the lower the cost to maintain the gym which translates to lower dues for you. Try to steer clear of health clubs, spas and the like. Good luck bro!

You're not too old to start, but there will be other boxers your age with a good amount of experience already. The best thing to do would be to find a few gyms in your area that offer a boxing program and decide which one is best for yourself. Also, you should start running and lifting weights now to prepare yourself for the workouts and training. Costs will vary by different gyms.

I dont think youd be too old, but search around for some boxing instruction places now. While youre at it, start running, a lot. Youll have a huge advantage the more in shape you are. good luck.
