The Devil is everything within them that human beings wanted to cut themselves off from and label as "mundane, profane, or blasphemous". Cloaking it in darkness and calling it sin didn't fix anything. Instead, we develop guilt and neurosis.

I say face the unknown.

Those who are afraid of the darkness always lack a light of their own.

I presume you're asking if a fear of the unknown is the basis for the idea of the Devil??

In which case I think not. Traditionally the Devil is represented as either the embodiment of evil, or a slanderer (from the Late Greek word Diabolos) ie a liar.

Generally the devil is thought of as an adversary to good (or God) but is limited in power and so is can only tempt people to act upon their prejudices, selfishness or fears.

In other words the devil can only act by making known to us our basest instincts. Almost ther opposite of a fear of the unknown I'd say!

Satan is reall he is not just some evil inside ourselves. Jesus was tempted by Satan and he did not think that Satan wasn't real but he acknowledged Satan's existance.
We learn a lot about the Devil when we consider Jesus' words to religious teachers of his day: "You are from your father the Devil, and you wish to do the desires of your father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is a liar and the father of the lie."—John 8:44.

According to this, the Devil, a name meaning "slanderer," was "a liar and the father of the lie." He was the first creature to lie about God, and he did so back in the garden of Eden. Jehovah had said that our original parents would "positively die" if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad. Through the mouth of a serpent, Satan said that those words were not true. (Genesis 2:17; 3:4) Appropriately, he is called "the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan."—Revelation 12:9.

fear of the unknown is simply that - the unknown
trying to justify it with expressions of evil is a little foolish
for example for many people Jesus is the unknown does this make Jesus Evil? no that would be absurd to claim that. yet people still fear to know him. the same is true for most other unknowns

Every person has his own fears according to his culture, family beliefs, and self conclusions.
Personally, I don't fear anything, I believe that we must fight our fears in order to eliminate them and growth emotionally and even as humans. As life passes people learn to beat their fears and leave them behind, and this is just because they have matured...

Devil or not, who really cares?
Even if there is no devil somewhere, everyone must behave, and treat others as how they would want to be treated...
Don't kill, don't lie, don't steal, this sound like common sense to me, and it should to anyone not suffering from a mental illness...

There is no need to be scare of a Devil... or anything else if you understand your surrounding and your place in this world...

I peasonal fear God more than the Devil because Lucifer was actualy an archangel that God banished for heaven so it is safe to say that God can do a lot more to hurt you than the devil can plus if you read revelation in the bible you will see what God plans to do with the earth and all of us

Satan is real, he is not some unknown human fear. The Devil or Satan was a created spirit being, an Angel. He was the most beautiful of Angels until his pride got the best of him and he thought he could be just as great or greater than God.

It is good to know that God loves us all enough to give us the ability to make our own decisions, even the Angels.

So Satan was cast out of Heaven and will be in Hell with all those that chose not to have a relationship with God.
