Check the colour of the cere. Boys are blue. I am not kidding!
Male and female parakeets sing about the same.....
It's canaries where only the boys sing.

Basically the bit above the beak is blue in male budgies (parakeets) and a pinky/browny colour for females.
If you decide to buy a new bird and you want one with a specific sex, check the top of its beak, however, keep in mind that the colour in young parakeets doesn't show for a little while.
Just for added information, the younger the parakeet the more black lines / markings it has on its head (right down towards their eyes). The older they get the lines go and is then the feathers in that area are the same colour as the main colour the bird is :)

Look at the cere which is right over the beak. A boy will have a dark blue or lavender cere and a girl will have a pink, tannish, or even light blue cere. Sometimes the color can be a little bit off because of genetics, so if you want a definate answer bring your bird to the vet for a blood test.

You have to put your finger right under the bird at it's vent where it poops to feel the bones. They have two little bones there. If the bones are close together it's male if they are apart it's a female. If you can't do this yourself go to a breeder so they can sex the parakeet. The breeder should know. They have to know.

If it sits down on the toilet to pee, it's a girl parakeet.
If it stands up and leaves the toilet seat up too, it's a boy parakeet.
