My 5.5 month old tomcat is driving me crazy, he runs up curtains, work tops, attacks slippers, bags, cloths and anything else in his path. As he is just slightly over 5 months now I am beginning to wonder if he is in need of getting neutered now to calm him down a little bit?? He will spend a lot of time sleeping in the day (normal, I know) and then runs around the house like crazy when we are trying to get some sleep at night. The other issue with him is that he only seems to poop once or twice a day, yet when I first had him he had diarrhoea for the first week (I wormed him since) and pooped loads. I am glad he doesn't have diarrhoea anymore but surely he should do more poop then that?? He gets about 3 pouches of food a day and he has a supply of kitten biscuits at all times. Any help is appreciated as I never had a cat this young I am a bit at a loss.

This is the "naughty" age of kittens. Neutering will help in the long run. It doesn't change the cat's personality and its playfulness. My cat at that age used to throw everything down, run around like crazy, climb, etc, especially during the night. Now he is 2 years old and he is lying around all day and sleeps at my feet every time I sleep, and he does no damage whatsoever around the house. So, my best advice is to have patience, keep him active during the evening, feed him before you sleep, and say No to him when he does something wrong, but not just No, pick him up and put him in another area, where he likes to play and he is allowed.

Yes it is done early. I have seen kittens neutered at as young as 8 weeks (but I don't recommend it). And in my state, all shelter animals must be neutered within 30 days of adoption, regardless of age. When it comes to neutering, most vets apply a weight limit (2-3 lbs) rather than an age limit. As long as your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia, he is healthy enough to be neutered. If your vet refuses to perform the surgery at 4 months, call around. You will be able to find one who will perform it.

What you are describing is normal kitten behavior. He just has to grow up. Pooping once or twice a day is about right. You should get him neutered right away. They are old enough at 12 weeks. It will prevent him from spraying and will also prevent him from fathering litters of homeless kittens.

It's a responsible thing to do, if your cat is out and about then there is a chance he could mate with female cats outside, either domestic or feral, in which case he could pick up a nasty disease from a feral female, or cause more unwanted wild cats out there. having found a kitten on Friday night, that was abandoned and sick, I would say that it is your responsibility to neuter your cat, to avoid bringing any more poor kittens into the world that will just get sick and die, like the one I found did.

No matter what, he needs neutering.
If you're not planning on purebreeding him, neuter him. Even if he was the perfect angel, you should, because otherwise he will find a way to get out there and make a few more litters of stray homeless starving kittens.

Unless you planning on breading your kitten, you should get him neutered. There are hundreds of unwanted cats in the world.

If you are concerned about how much & often you cat poops, talk to your vet, but think of it this way -- how often do you poop??

he sounds like a normal naughty active cat.
get him more toys and teach him how to behave by rewarding good behaviour with treats and punish bad by straying him with water.

the pooping thing sounds normal as younger animals cant hold it as long but when they get older the can hold it.

neutering may clam him down but i dout it will much. but it will prevent him wandering, spraing and some other behaviroal problems when he is older.
