Unfortunately not. What your male cat is doing is called "spraying". And like you said, he is marking his territory.
Getting him fixed will NOT resolve the problem once he starts. When a male feline starts to spray, he will continue to do so for the rest of his life. If your male cat would have been neutered(?) around the 6 month stage, he would have an almost 98% chance of never spraying because he would have no need to "mark his territory" due to the lack of hormones.
I am taking my little guy Felix (6 months, 3 days)in this week to get him fixed before he starts doing the same thing. I will double check with my vet to see if there is anyway to deter your guy from doing this and post back in a couple days if you would like.

The best way to end the marking is by having your pet neutered. Male cats mark for territorial reasons, to claim something as their own and to show their dominance. All of this is due to hormones. Once your cat is neutered he will lose the desire to be dominant and will stop spraying. It usually helps with any aggressive behavior also.
Just be sure that once they are healed, they get plenty of excercise and playtime because they can gain weight due to the lessening of these hormone levels.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to stop a cat from doing anything that he has set his mind on. My best advice is to fill a super soaker squirt gun and give him a good squirt each time he starts to mark. If he hasn't been neutered already, neuter him.

You cant stop that behavior without nutting him. Its a natural behavior and a cat is driven by instinct, not a conscious mind.
I.e. it does not "know that it is doing it", it does it because of chemical and electrical signals in its brain and bollocks.

Get him desexed and even after unfortunately it still can happen, that's if he get's desexed too late. And the trick with the water pistol or whatever you call it is not too bad too. Should help but you always have to be alert.
